ok hubby has given his blessing to put another tree in the back yard. I would like to put an apple tree in the corner. I can only plant 1 so would need a self pollinating apple, preferably on the smaller side and fast growing would be nice. I want something dark colored for vitamin content as if its good for eating as well as baking would be even better. Any suggestions?

Since Texas is sooo big, and covers so many zones, I would suggest that you call your local extension office. I think yours would be Archer County. Is that correct? The tried and true, go to it website for me would be Texas A&M's: http://agrilifeextension.tamu....

I have a Cornett, but I've never gotten apples. Lots of blooms, but no apples. I think it's just too hot here.

Here most people plant Anna and Dorset (it takes both), but I think some other low chill hour apples have been developed recently, as well as trees with Anna and Dorset grafted together.

I have some apple trees that have never beared fruit. I've got Fuji and Gala and I consider them to be a waste of time for the south. I definitely want to try out Anna and Golden Dorsett. TropicSweet is the new patented cultivar that is supposedly better than 'Anna'. I'd like to try out all of these but the wallet is disagreeing with me at the moment. These cultivars are expensive!

ok I thought the multi grafted trees sounded interested and I have found two that peaked my interest. I would love to do the one with the 4 diff varieties on it for spring through fall harvest, but I'm not sure if 4 varieties are too much for one tree. The other has two but would only produce in Sept. What do you guys think?

I think the most critical thing for an apple tree in the south is that it require few "chill hours" . Anna and Dorset are the two that have proven they can produce in my area. You may have more chill hours in your area but will still, probably be limited in your apple choices.

now it says up to zone 8 is that not taking chill hours into account?

I bought a four way dwarf apple four years ago from one of our Master Gardener sales. I will say that my experience has been less than positive. I didn't want multiple trees because we can't use that many apples and thought this was the way to go. Two of the grafts have failed, leaving me with Anna and Golden Dorset neither one was one I prefer. At our old farm we had an Ian Schiemer (sp) that produced ok. I did get one apple off my little tree this year, maybe more next. My complaint besides the grafts failing, is that each branch blooms at a different time. Love the dwarf part though. If I get another, it wouldn't have more than two varieties.
