Hello everyone! Great humor here and I do like that. I have been wanting to grow one of these for quite some time. I live on the east coast and I was about to order one or two from --Plant Delights Nursery:
http://www.plantdelights.com/s...

I was reading your thread and wondering what is 'BGI' ?
I was assuming that these could be left in the ground but it is looking like you take cuttings and root them for next year?

Hi Susan,

BGI stands for Brugmansia Growers International, the site dedicated to brugs and daturas. People from all over the world are members. You can also sign in as a guest. You get lots of great information from some world renowned brug growers, and they have a fabulous gallery of plants. You can get some plant supplies, and periodically cuttings, plants, and seeds for sale. They also have contests for seeds and sometimes cuttings. It is an excellent website.

BGI is the best place to be if you intend to go over board like the rest of us LOL. But we do have our JT right here. He is a wealth on knowledge and never get tired of answering my beginners questions. I agree

I love going overboard!! Green Grin!

I would like to make sure I am understanding the zone requirements and what and where to get started. I do like the idea of starting off with a plant, It would be good to know the best time to plant it and the best place to order from. I do want plants that are true to name.

@ Susan
Established brugs should over winter in your zone.I would not expect a young plant to survive the winter if planted out this late in the season but those planted in the spring should have no trouble.

I see that Susan is in the same zone as I am. However, my puny brug is quite small, with only a few leaves on it. I was planning to pot it up and take it inside for the winter. A few years ago, I got a similar size plant from Plant Delights and I left it out in the ground, and it died. We do get snow here every winter. Would that make a difference? It is getting close to the time that I need to dig it up, if I do.

I love Plant Delights and I would trust them for a good size plant but PD and the posters here said to plant them in spring so they will establish before winter. Also I read not to prune dead stalks till spring. Only an established plant would be hardy from 7b to 10 or so. As you see we are on the edge of the zone requirement and that makes me nervous because zones are based on average temperatures so my weather sometimes dips down similar to zone 7 and other times the temps seem more like zone 10! My challenge is to purchase plants that are at least hardy to zone 7b so that when it does dip down I will not loose plants, especially expensive ones! However purchasing zone 7 plants can be tricky too because most of them need a good cold spell which they probably will not get here. I would really like to plant one out in the ground and leave it but I see most people have them in pots. Maybe we can learn a few tricks here or maybe I will just experiment with a cheap plant to start off with. I guess it doesn't matter because we only dip way down about every ten years, but I sure do not want to loose a plant that is over 5 years old, that would drive me crazy. LOL.

(check this out, I want this one!!)

I live in zone 7a, and was recently rezoned to 7b, but in my garden we have 7a temps. We had frost several nights last week, and 2 nights below freezing. This yellow brug came through just fine. I didn't cover it. These pictures were taken this evening.

I did cover Klein Lady, she had some frost damage on the upper branches, the lower branches are fine, and she's still blooming.

The yellow brug has been coming back from the roots for years, and this is the 2nd year that Klein Lady has also come back from the roots. I can't stand looking at the dead stems so I do cut them back once the stems are fully dead, and I mulch them lightly with pine straw.

That's the one I have but it does not look anything like that picture. To be fair, I did not get it from PD this time, but from Annie's Annuals.

In any case, I will be digging it up soon and putting it in a pot for the winter until late spring.

Has anyone ever ordered from Jammys Gems? They've got gorgeous pictures on their website, and I want to order some of their plants next spring.

@Annette Those look good thanks for posting the advice and pictures, I will be considering those for sure. I was in 7b then they changed it to 8. I never heard of Jammy's Gems but according to watchdog they are fairly new, only two reviews that are great, and they got their start on eBay. I like that they are in South Carolina, sounds like a good company.

@evelyninthegarden I have never been able to order from Annie's because of high shipping. The one time I tried to order they were going to charge 25.00 shipping for two small plants. That was crazy because I get plants from other people in California and recently I did a trade with someone in Washington state and the shipping was normal and only took two days.
If it does not look like the picture what does it look like? Is it not orange?

Susan,

thanks for sharing the watch dog link regarding Jammys Gems. Their website has been saved as 1 of my favorites. I see that they're in South Carolina, and I live in North GA, so shipping shouldn't be too bad for me. I'm looking forward to ordering from them next spring.

You are welcome Annette! I tip my hat to you. I am also on the east coast so I will probably order from her also.

Just a small limb with a few leaves. No flowers yet....one side of the "Y" dried up on the end and stopped prducing leaves.
