Finally I got L. gloriosoides to bloom. Started from seed on 12-17-09, only got 7 little bulbs, then this year only 3 came up. Only 1 will bloom. I think I lost the rest.

Gee, Michael, you sound so nonchalant. You should be jumping up and down!

Quite a feat. CONGRATULATIONS! Hurray! Hurray! Hurray! Hurray! Hurray!
And to go from zero bloom one year to 3 blooms the next for this species - incredible!

I think the bulbs are extremely susceptible to rot during the "dormant" season.

Congratulations Michael! Hurray!
I never was successful with this lily. Therefore I am very interested in your growing method as well as in the substrates you used.
How did you treat the seeds (temperature,moisture,....)? As far as I know, L. gloriosoides germinates delayed hypogeal - right.

I germinated just like my Western Lilies. 3 months in peat in a baggy in a room about 43-48 degree, no light, then 3 months in the refrig. and placed outside in a 1 gallon container. It seems it took a long time to flower. When I transplanted them individually I lost most of them. I kept them under cover during the winter and I did not water them which I think was my mistake. I think I should have moistened them a little during the winter months.

Thanks for your reply, Michael.
43-48 degree Farenheit seem quite cool to me - at least for delayed hypogeal germinators. However, I am quite sure that stopping watering the seedlings in winter was the correct decision. L. gloriosoides is very sensitive to moisture in the rest-period and likes to rot.

Michael, the seeds germinated and produced a tiny bulb at 42-48F? That is indeed enlightening. Do you remember how long it took for the seed to produce what looked like the "root" coming out of the seed (that terminated in the tiny bulb)?

That is why I am a fanatic record keeper.

There have been times, too, when I thought I was remembering correctly, but my my records proved me wrong!
