Thread OP

Hello: I live in Tucson, AZ and have just planted the Salvia greggii "Strawberry". It is quite young - about twelve inches tall. During the year how should it be pruned, especially in late fall? Thanks, Roibert Greene

Hi Roibert and Welcome! to ATP!!!

Obviously, I do not live in your climate but I used grow Salvias and I pruned mine in late winter/very early spring. Though I would trim off any branches that looked bad. I have read that a light pruning in midsummer may help with a new flush of blooms too.

I would prune just after last frost and again about 2 months before first frost but your in AZ so you may be able to prune a third time in the middle of that time frame. I would prune the plant by about a third each time. About 4" if the plant is only 12" tall.

I don't know what your zone is, but I'm zone 6a and I prune a Salvia greggii no later than late Summer and wait until late Spring the following year to insure hardiness of the Salvia. Sometimes a Salvia greggii will survive our Winters.

Welcome to ATP and if you're interested, come on over to the Agastaches and Salvias forum here at ATP! Thumbs up

I'm not familiar with Salvia greggii 'Strawberry'. I'll have to do a search for that one. Sounds like a beauty!
