I use alfalfa on my daylilies each spring but I don't feel that it takes the place of fertilizer. I had gotten two 50 lb bags early this week and wanted to get the pellets spread around as soon as possible.

It did rain heavily overnight so I should have put out the Alfalfa yesterday but I didn't. So today its just aweful, raw and cold and damp. But its not raining so I made myself go out and spread the alfalfa today. It should rain some more and I wanted to get this done. The two bags did everything I wanted to do so I guess it was enough. Its mostly the roses and daylilies that get the alfalfa and afew handfuls get tossed on other things here and there.

Like I said before, I just toss them around the plants. Works for me. But I also use fertilizer. Usually I just put the bagged fertilizer out each spring but got lazy this year and sprayed everthing with Neptunes liquid Seaweed Fertilizer with my hose end sprayer the other day.

I am glad to know that the daylilies like epson salts, I'll give them some when I feed the roses. I just added some daylilies, so I want them to be happy.

I cut the tops and bottoms off a soda bottle and use it as a sleeve around new and sensitive plants. I leave part above the soil, the rest below. You can add a bit of sluggo It seems to help protect them from cutworms and slugs. It helps you find the plants in the early spring, also. Some people do the same with a bottomless nursery pot, but I am perpetually short of pots, so I use the soda bottles. They are easy to cut away if you don't need them anymore.
