Double Your Spring Bulb Flowers with Tulips and Daffodils

By Newyorkrita
September 15, 2013

To have more interest and blooms in the spring garden, plant early blooming daffodils behind later blooming Darwin Tulips. By the time the tulips begin blooming, the daffodils will have finished blooming, and the tulip blooms will help hide the daffodil foliage.

Marilyn, I don't have a lot of land, I just cram a lot in. Hilarious!

It hardly takes up any more room to do this way than just some tulips or daffs alone and it gives you a longer season of spring blooms. And I am all about lots of blooms for my garden. Smiling

This shows why we all look forward to spring and photos of your garden. Your hard work every fall pays off in gorgeous spring color. Very nice article Rita!

Here is a side bar....hope it is OK..I went to one of the big box stores today and they had a huge display of bags of 60 bulbs for $9.00. Pretty pictures and tempting to the average person. The problem is of the 60 bulbs 10 were tulips or daffs....the balance grape hyacinths. To me grape hyacinths are pretty but verge on being a noxious weed.. You get what you pay for,

I would rather just buy bags of just only tulips or bags of just only hyacinths. I wouldn't want those grape hyacinths myself either! But I have in the past gotten nice bags of tulips very cheaply at Home Depot. Problem is they sell out as fast as they come in so you just have to be lucky that you happened to be at HD and happened to see them. 3 or 4 days later, they are totally gone.

And they get them in so early. I don't really want bags of tulips to take home in August.

I agree Rita. I have found nice bulbs at HD if you get there at the right time, I remember when the nurseries here had nice bulbs loose in big bins. I bought many over the years this way but often found that the consumer before me had mixed them up.

I only buy on line these days. Bulbs come to my door, I can get exactly what I want. But I bought locally and at HD for years when I only planted a few bulbs each fall.

In the l960's my Father bought a large order of bulbs from Scheepers. I was planting them and listening to a portable radio and heard he news the John F Kennedy had been assassinated. A few days later I remember sitting at the dinner table with my family watching the funeral on a little portable TV. I remember I planted the tulips and daffs in clumps. When they bloomed Dad did not like it. He wanted them in rows.

I remember.

Once I asked a younger lady whom I was trying to get close to where SHE was.

She said "I read about that ... in HISTORY."
