To mulch or not to mulch

After dealing with iris borers this summer. And having to dig up all the iris' out and replanting them. I am wondering if putting red cedar wood chips down is a good or a bad idea. The iris' are in a mixed border. Kim

Keep the mulch several inches away from the rhizomes......
