Welcome! Saradl

That is some type of asparagus fern, not sure which one. Does it have thorns on the branch next to where the small leaves come out? It doesn't look like it. look here, Asparagus Fern (Asparagus densiflorus 'Sprengeri')

Welcome! to ATP, Sara!
We grow asparagus ferns outside in summer, and indoors in winter. They are kind of messy, but easy to grow. In the winter, they get inedible red berries. I like putting them in a basket with other plants. They have really cool nodules on the roots where they store water if they have a neglectful owner like me. I've had their roots get so big they bust the flower pot! The tops grow much better if the roots are crowded, though. Lovey dubby

It's an interesting novelty where cold/wet winters keep it from being a horrible nuisance. Otherwise, it's a horrible nuisance. The (yes they're pretty) berries sprout new (thorny, perennial) plants that are impossible to pull because of those tuberous roots you mention, Cindi. (Always love to hear from someone who repots plants though, cheers & more power to that!) I fear from the adjacent Ruellia that the A-fern is hardy where Saradl is.

Tiffany, I'm glad you posted that they do become a nuisance in warmer climates. You may have prevented someone from having a real issue!
There are quite a few plants that yankees are enthusiastic about without realizing that our winters save us. Thumbs up

I hope so, my Mom was so excited about her potted plant surviving the first winter down here... and seeing the pretty berries, and now there's tons of this stuff around her yard. Spider plant did the same thing but at least stayed in a patch, and much easier to dig up. Then there's the pretty variegated Vinca vine, which barely struggled to survive in her yard in central OH, but has managed to spread over a huge area of one of her beds here. I don't like anything that forces someone to have so much of it, the latter 2 trip people trying to walk around in them, not to mention the invasive exotic thing. For something to look at, they are so pretty though. That's how they get around. And being native is definitely not equal to being pretty or garden-worthy. Can't go wrong with real ferns though, probably happy in place of a-fern if one is after that kind of look. Many pretty choices among them.
