For some plants, it's possible to upload to just the genus name, like Ipomoea. I spot a lot of other lesser known wildflowers that sometimes have upwards of 50 possible species known in the area, rendering a species ID impossible in some cases from the pictures I've taken. Am I missing a button somewhere or is not not possible to add general genus pictures to all genuses? Thanks for reading!

That only works in the cases where we have created a plant for such a purpose. I think we're always open to creating more when they are needed.

Tiffany: If you know the Genus ('s) of those wildflowers maybe you can post a list so Dave could create"Parent Plant" entries for them; then we'll have a spot for those photo's where the species isn't known.

Thanks for the responses!

I don't want to ask for stuff that is too arcane/unlikely to be much used if it takes up people's time, but very much appreciate knowing how it would be done. After accumulating more pics, I might see which really good shots I have of mysteries (regarding specific species) that are attractive enough that others would generally notice them out there. IOW, don't bother with the 'boring' stuff. LOL! The fall season just got kickin'...

I very much appreciate the help learning to navigate/use this awesome site, TY!

Don't worry about this. If you have an image or information to contribute, we're happy to create an appropriate entry for it.

Besides, most of the species we have in our database could be described as arcane and unlikely to be used much, but they do exist, so they do belong in the database.

I agree Definitely!! Propose it or put it in a thread here. Easy peasy.

Thanks from me also. I have photos of some of these plants, that I don't have a positive species ID on.

Sphaeralcea parent please, if there isn't one already - even the experts have difficulty with this one. One NM plant expert says on his website for Sphaeralcea incana "As with all Sphaeralcea, my identification is somewhat uncertain." I remember reading on another website that the differences between two of the species could only be determined in the lab!

Well that's really cool, and inspires me to stop and 'catch' s'more wild things while out there, with camera along. And I think some of my house plants are missing from my list here. Genuses with recurring mysteries...

Dracaena is one.
Cordyline.
Gardenia.

It is actually pretty hard to 'stump' the database for a "common" genus without a parent plant! Well done already!

This is probably as good of a place to ask as any, I'm confused why the parent plant of Plectranthus goes to Coleus?

Cordyline has been in the database for a long time:

Ti (Cordyline)

The plural of genus, by the way, is genera, not genuses.

The parent plant for Plectranthus applies only to Plectranthus scutellarioides and its synonym, Solenostemon scutellarioides, and it actually is the parent plant for the Coleus Database.

Coleus (Coleus scutellarioides)

We really do need a general Plectranthus entry for the other species, I agree. Evan might be able to edit the Coleus Database parent plant so that it doesn't show up just as Plectranthus. I'm not sure of the mechanics for this change.
