Did you try slowing the drip down, sorry to here that it didn't work. You will not have to warter everyday with the sprinklers. I water every other day for 20 minutes with those mist typt.

To slow the drip down I would have to fill in all the holes with caulking and redrill smaller ones. The drip really isn't a drip like the directions I found online seemed to imply it would be. It's more like a low pressure water fountain (the kind you drink out of). If I turn down the water at the source then there's not enough pressure to push the water all the way through to the ends of each pipe. What I have decided to do is take those out and put in some of the mist types. I love the ones I put in my flower bed. I will probably use the drip lines for an in ground bed which it's actually better suited for anyway. Things just don't always work out the way you see them in your head. Sad LOL

I have done several things that did not work like my mind thought it would, to many to mention. On those misters I put mine 10 foot apart, that way they overlap some, I have 65# of water pressure so you may have to experiment a little to get the right distance. Also make your main water line is 3/4 and reduce it 1/2 where you come up for the misters so you will have enough volume. I used 3/4 x 1/2 tees so all the upright pipe is 1/2 inch. I attached mine to the box itself. My boxes are 3 foot apart so one set of misters will do two boxes.Thumb of 2011-03-31/spunky1/0ae23a

Here is a link to building a raised bed without using treated lumber. Note: this guy is a little ummmmm different. He is a handyman- custom painter in NY city during the week, and has a farmhouse in the country where he does gardening, beekeeping, cooking, podcasting and how to videos on the weekend. He has two Labradors and the neighbors have several, so the videos are half about the dogs.

He has a quirky sense of humor, and something always goes wrong... But isn't that the way it goes when you try to fix something yourself?

I like his videos and podcasts. Good recipes, easy to follow instructions. I can no longer bend to reach to pick lettuce, and will be going to lowes today to get stuff to make a raised bed following Eric's instructions. My handyman guy will be here next week.

Please note.... I didn't mean that anyone should **not**use treated lumber... *Blush* When Frilly was saying her Mom has problems bending down, it reminded me of making trying Eric's simple raised bed for veggies. Sorry for butting into the raised bed for daylily discussion...

Thanks. My Mom decided she didn't want me to have a raised bed built after all. I have learned not to argue. I sure think it would make things easier, but ?

I think I may put some seed in a couple porch planter boxes anyway. See how she likes that.

The Composite wood here has a 30 yr guarantee not to rot or fade. I've read a couple of articles otherwise, but it may just be that particular manufacturer. If it wasn't so expensive I might have tried it. It's 3 times as much as treated lumber here. I've read treated lumber can last anywhere from 2-20 yrs depending on the conditions it's in and if you maintain it (seal it periodically like you would a deck). There is also double treated wood that lasts longer than regular treated wood, but don't know how much longer. I think Fred (spunky1) has had his beds about 7 yrs, maybe longer with no problems. Maybe he'll chime in on this. Cedar supposedly will never rot, but it is extremely expensive to build with.

I have bird feeders my uncle made out of cedar... They might not "rot" but they have split with time every place he put in a screw or nail. He was a proper carpenter, so I think they were done with good technique. They lasted about five years before they were split enough to leak to the point the seed was always wet.

On my screen porch, I have cedar covering the posts on the outside. It holds the screen in place. It has never been stained or treated. It is screwed on. Maybe it is better quality, or thicker, or ? than the bird feeder cedar, as it has been on there at least twenty five years and has not split or had any other problems. Has even been taken off twice, new screen put on the porch, and the wood put back up.

Frilly, now that would be very cute; seashells or other things pressed in. I like that idea.

I do not think Concrete would be good, I heard somewhere daylilies do not like it if the bottom is concrete, just the sides may be fine. I have never had any problem with insects eating the boxes made from treated lumber. Like Tink said, the first ones I made are still in good shape and have been here for several years. I do not expect them to last forever but I am satisfied with how long they have lasted.
