Thanks, Woofie and Susan. As you can see when it was the vegetable garden the path had all straight lines and it made sense. Once Jack gave it all to me I knew the path had to change so I hired a local company and the chief mason knew what I was describing and did a super excellent job.

I loved being 55! Enjoy every minute of it.

Yes, for sure it is always a work in progress. Soon as one thing is done another has started and round and round she goes. Rolling on the floor laughing

Sometimes it all feels like a big juggling act. We finish one garden while we consider another project as life, family and the world goes on and we're the ones constantly trying to keep up the best we can.

I guess a garden is a journey, not an event. It never ends , it wends.

At least on this website there is company.

Have a bee.

Hi Arlene,

I think we would have great fun on a dahlia forum here. Often I find bees asleep, zonked, on the dahlias overnight, and you have to be very careful when you take flowers in case you accidentally have a dazed bee land on you. Sometimes you get stung, which is bad luck for the poor old bee as we all know, it is about the last thing they do in their wee life.

We have no frost yet, but the dahlias are like little kids after about 7pm, they just want to go to bed, so I am closing them all out over the next couple of week ends.

I have been thinking that I probably need to take out the senior tuber, as I think that is the one that mainly rots. What do you think?

Kind regards,

Peter

I've often found bees and wasps too tucked inside the petals of my dahlias. And I do NOT enjoy finding one wandering around on the table or in the window next to a bouquet! Hilarious!

It's true, Peter. The mother bulb does tend to rot and sometimes disintegrates.

Those bees do get lazy at this time of year and they're often asleep but at least they don't snore.

Where do you live, Peter, that you don't have frost yet? Our frost arrived 11/12/13.

It took us days to get all the dahlias dug and now they're all out on a table (outside) draining and soon (when it gets a bit warmer) I'll finish packaging them for their long winter sleep.

Two branches had broken off from the main stem of this one and left it filled with water. The water doesn't bother me, that's why I have them draining, but had it been snow or ice it would have meant death for the dahlia.

I never check mine. Although, in the past they were kept in the crawl space which was a huge pain to get in to. This year they are in the garage, wrapped in saran, stored in a dark bin. Still, I doubt I will check them. What will be will be
