Protecting Your Favorite Plant(s) During Construction

The priorities of a gardener! We were going through the two day process of having our roof replaced and I didn't want my li'l "Dragon" to get destroyed in the process. What's a gardener to do?

Shingles can make a mess. That is a good idea!
As I am writing this, a t storm with hail is passing over. I may have to buy some extra laundry baskets

I tried this with older, overturned Adirondack chairs. I came out at one time and the chairs had been removed! I had to gently persuade the tree cutting crew that I really didn't mind if the chairs were somehow damaged, but that I wanted them there to protect my plants! Rolling on the floor laughing

We had our roof re-shingled 2 years ago, when the guy came to give us an estimate he commented on how nice my garden looked. I asked him if he could do the job without damage to my shrubs and flower beds close to the house, he said no problem. He explained how they would remove the old shingles by stacking them and then straight into the garbage bins that were parked in front of the garage. They did a great job on the roof and not one plant got damaged. Thumbs up

I totally agree w/ you shingles can be a mess, I am still finding lil' chunks in the grass and am having to pick them up. Crying
I should throw them in my flower beds so the slugs get cut up on them.
*Light bulb, what a great idea* Big Grin
Did you have damage from that hail storm, and did you go out and purchase some new laundry baskets? Rolling on the floor laughing

@chelle
Did the tree cutting guys know that you'd placed the chair there for protection?
If so that was kinda silly of them to move it.
Hopefully you didn't have any damage to your plants during the process, did you?
By the way, IE: the chair, another great idea. Thumbs up
Tree limbs would have certainly crushed my dragon cage. Sad

@mcash70
WOW you had a terrific crew working on your roof.
I only had a lil' damage to my Black eyed Susans and my Marigolds that have grown to a bit over 2 feet tall.
They apologized but it was not a big deal as I was more worried about my Echinaceas that were on the other side of the deck.
Heck fire, they all will grow back. nodding

Shawsannda, the crew that worked on our roof were indeed terrific, we have a large roof and they had it finished in 1and 1/2 days. They left no garbage or broken shingles, very few nails as they went around with a roller magnet and picked them up. Thumbs up Thumbs up

I guess not.

Surprisingly enough, not much damage occurred. I moved the logs and limbs aside and replaced the chairs, and the crew continued the job. Big Grin
