Dottie's Obit has posted.

Dorothy M. "Dottie" Warrell passed away on March 17, 2024 at age 93. She was born January 24, 1931 to Arthur Nels Sogaard and Marie Louise Johnson at the Sundown farm in Minnesota.

Dottie was baptized and a member of Sundown Lutheran Church. She graduated from Springfield High School in 1949, attended the Lamberton Teacher Training Department 1949-1950, and attended Mankato State Teachers College 1951-1954. Dottie received her teaching certificate in 1954.

She taught school in Wabasso, Springfield, and Mountain Lake, Minnesota from 1950-1955. She taught grades 4-5 in Pataskala, Ohio 1959-1960, and was a substitute teacher in Licking County Schools from 1971-1985.

Dottie met Howard "Boots" Warrell when he came to her hometown to play baseball in 1954. They married, and after a brief time living in Pennsylvania, settled in Pataskala, Ohio in 1959.

Dottie had a life-long interest in flower gardening and hybridizing daylilies. She was a member of the American Iris Society, the National Hemerocallis Society, and the Ohio Hemerocallis Society. She served as Ohio Vice President and Secretary for ten years in the Daylily Society. She enjoyed competing in local shows and served as show chairwoman several times.

In 1968 Dottie and Boots purchased a 5-acre plot near Granville, Ohio. The house was built, a pond was excavated, and they began their adventure at Twin Beech Gardens. Twin Beech Gardens was in business for over 50 years. Her garden was unique and was visited each year by many garden tours. It was her pride and joy. She hybridized numerous daylilies, registered them, and earned many awards for her creations. Her family, including nieces, nephews, and grandchildren, have all had the honor of Dottie creating and registering flowers in their names. All were given special names, suited to their personalities and heritage, and is a gift that will last a lifetime.

Dottie also had a passion for crocheting. It was her wish to reach 200 published crochet patterns by her 90th birthday. It took a bit longer. At the age of 93, she had published 206 patterns. Her first pattern had a daylily motif and appeared on the cover of Woman's Circle Crochet magazine in 1986. From there she began entering Herrshner's Grand National contests, followed by Annie's Attic, McCall's Needlework, Crochet Fantasy, Coats and Clark, Crochet World, Lion Brand, Crochet!, DRG Publishers, and Mary Maxim. Many of her patterns are shown online. She has gifted family and friends with her special afghans.

When Dottie wasn't in her garden or crocheting, she was reading a book, writing letters, sending birthday and other greeting cards, working a crossword puzzle, making dinner, or baking a dessert.
Dottie was completely deaf for the last 25 years of her life. She learned to use the computer and emailing became a lifeline for her to communicate with others. She cherished her daily emails with her sister Arleen, her family, and friends.

Preceding her in death is her husband, Howard "Boots" Warrell; her parents, Arthur and Marie Sogaard; brother, Loren (Carol) Sogaard and Roy (Evelyn) Sogaard, sister, Marie Ann Sogaard, brother, Elton (Marilyn) Sogaard, brother Merlyn (Kathleen) Sogaard, and sister Geraldine Sogaard.

Dottie will be profoundly missed by her son, Arthur (Ann) Warrell, son, Robert (Sue, deceased), daughter, Mary Lynn (Douglas) Delp, grandsons, Christopher (Tricia), Michael, Zachary (fiancee Kimmy Jo and son Nolan) Warrell, Brandon (Ariel) and Blayne Delp, great grandchildren George and Bobby Warrell, Landan, Camden and Adley Delp, sister Arleen Wood, and many nieces and nephews.
Private inurnment will take place in Kirkersville Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Ohio's Hospice of Central Ohio, 2269 Cherry Valley Road, Newark, OH 43055.

Hoskinson Funeral & Cremation Service in Kirkersville is honored to care for Dottie and her family

For the joy of gardening
Wonderful article Julie! Thank you for sharing.
A garden requires patient labor and attention. Plants do not grow merely to satisfy ambitions or to fulfill good intentions. They thrive because someone expended effort on them.
