In this week’s hybridizer introduction we travel to Savannah, Georgia where the hybridizing programs of the Joiner family began with Enman R. Joiner Sr. This is part one of a two part hybridizer series on the daylilies of the Joiner family.

After starting an early career working for Savannah Linen supply and then serving in the U.S. Army, Enman Joiner Sr. married Frances Windham and returned to Savannah, Georgia. Joiner Daylily Garden was established on land purchased in 1962 and in 1966 Enman registered his first daylilies, ‘Rio Vista’, Savannah Moon’, ‘Tomachichi’ and ‘Vernonburg’. Enmans hybridizing interests soon included the double forms with ‘Tibbles’ (1971) becoming the first double form to be registered by the Joiners. The AHS database shows in 1971 when ‘Tibbles’ was registered there were only 128 double form registrations. The current definition of a double form from the AHS Dictionary of Daylily Terms is “ DOUBLE: Single flowers consist of two whorls (layers) of perianth segments: the sepals and the petals. A double flower has more than one petal whorl (hose-in-hose double), or a stamen whorl that contains petaloid (petal-like) stamens (peony type double). In the peony type, carpels may also be petaloid. Individual flowers may be a combination of both double types. Outgrowths of extra tissue from the midrib or elsewhere on a petal are not considered to constitute a double. Extra segments in the normal two perianth whorls classify a flower as polymerous rather than double.”

Enman continued hybridizing for double forms and over his hybridizing career registered 107 double form daylilies.

Frances Joiner (Joiner, 1988)

‘Frances Joiner’, registered in 1988, was introduced at the 1989 AHS National Convention where it was awarded the 1989 Presidents Cup for most outstanding clump seen in an AHS National Convention tour garden. This was the second Presidents Cup for a Joiner bred daylily, ‘Savannah Moon’ received the first in 1970. Daylilies hybridized by Enman Joiner have received many AHS awards including five Ida Munson Awards, a specialty award given annually for the best double flower. The Ida Munson Award winners are ‘Francis Joiner’ in 1993,

‘Vanilla Fluff’ (Joiner, 1988) in 1996,

‘Peach Magnolia’ (Joiner, 1986) in 2002,

‘Moses’ Fire (Joiner, 1998) in 2008

and ‘Scatterbrain’ (Joiner, 1988) in 2010.

‘Orange Velvet’, a 6 ½ inch orange single form, received the Lennington All-American Award for a daylily showing outstanding performance in many different growing areas. In total 11 AHS Awards of Merit have been received by daylilies registered by Enman, ‘Wispy Rays’ in 2010 and ‘Dublin Elaine’ in 2011 being the most recent cultivars to receive this award.

Orange Velvet (Joiner, 1988)

Wispy Rays (Joiner, 1998 )

Dublin Elaine (Joiner, 1987 )

Personal awards received by Enman Joiner include the 1993 Bertrand Farr Silver Medal recognizing outstanding work in the area of hybridizing and the 2001 Region 5 Regional Service Award for AHS service at the regional level. In 2007 a new personal award, the Steve Moldovan Mentoring Award, was established in memory of Steve Moldovan and was awarded for the first time at the AHS National Convention in 2009 to Enman R. Joiner, Sr.

After 46 years of hybridizing award winning daylilies, Enman R. Joiner, Sr. passed away on February 25, 2008.

Char, that was a nice piece on the Joiners. Is J. Joiner a son or Daughter? The hybridizer of Peggy Jeffcoat. I have Wispy Rays, Big Kiss and Dublin Elaine. They do very well here.

Also have Savannah Banana Split somewhere, although it has yet to bloom for me. One of my grandniece's is named Savannah and her nickname is Savannah Banana, so, it was a natural.

Mike, Jan Joiner is Enman's daughter-in-law. Jan is married to Enman and Frances' son Royce who has recently started hybridizing, too.

Thank you Mike. As Doris said (Thank you Doris for answering Mike yesterday), Jan is Enman's daughter-in-law. Part two will feature the daylilies of Jan, Royce and Aaron Joiner. Beautiful images of Mose's Fire, Debra.
I've grown a few of Enman's daylilies here over the years. Double forms Mose's Fire, Big Kiss, Frances Joiner, Peach Magnolia, Vanilla Fluff and Fresh Start - borrowed an image from the ATP Database, I can't find one in my files on this computer.

A few of his single flowers including Wispy Rays, Humdinger and Mom's Pet...

Humdinger

Mom's Pet, this is a favorite, lots of blooms, great branching and budcount. Plus the name fits in my "Dog bed" theme. Smiling

Just got Moses' Fire from a friend last year and am anxiously awaiting blooms next year.

Here is a cute little one that I got as a bonus:

Hmm, I love WISPY RAYS, just never noticed that it was a Joiners plant. SCATTERBRAIN is a favorite double here. I only have a few and MOSES FIRE is also.

I purchased a Joiner double many years ago as Vanilla Fluff. Someone on here told me it was Scatterbrain. Now as I look at the pic above of Fresh Start, it looks more that color. Here it is, what does everyone think??

Below is 'Vanilla Fluff' which came directly from the Joiners some years ago. It is one of the FEW daylilies in the garden that I can detect a fragrance!

Yours is definately more vanilla colored than mine. That's why I don't think mine is Vanilla Fluff. Mine is more peach in color.

Geez, I meant to include images of some more "peachy" ones from Enman Joiner.

Here's Scatterbrain:

Peach Magnolia:

Yours possibly could be one of these Joiner cultivars? All are well distributed. I grow or have grown all of the above. Yours does seem to be lighter, so it possibly could be Scatterbrain.

Here's one with more shades of pink in it, another Joiner double : Peggy Bass. Yours sorta reminds me of this one. You can't see it so well on this picture, but both your picture and this one show ruffling on the petal edges.

I have Peach Magnolia so I know it is not that one. I am thinking also that it is Scatterbrain. This summer I will take some new measurements to be sure. Thanks!!!

Jan Joiner is trying to "rejoin" the 800+ daylilies that her family has hybridized over the years. Even though they retired in the winter of 2018, their garden will be on display in the 2020 National. I would like to send a list of the missing daylilies to anyone who is interested in helping them find all these beauties. Most of the missing ones are older, hybridized before 2000.

Glad to see this thread revived. I believe I separated my 'Peach Magnolia' a few years ago to give some to a friend and it really took a hit. Looking forward to more blooms this year. It is not a prolific bloomer in my garden and the branching isn't the greatest, but it gets some shade so maybe that is why.

I am not 'into' doubles very much, but I just love the color of PM. I bought it in 2004 for $7, the year I found out there were daylilies other than Stella de Oro.

This picture was taken in 2009 and I just love the way the ninebark accentuates the color of PM. I don't have the ninebark anymore and PM got moved a few feet away years ago.

Wow does this bring back memories! Juli and I had a good time writing the hybridizer series back then. There is a link to more articles in the series on the right side of the Daylily forum home page in the Welcome box. I don't think we ever got around to adding all of them to the listing though. I'm making a note for me to update the links to any missing articles as I type. Smiling
