I only have one that I automatically think of when someone mentions a bloom hanging up, and that is WONDER OF IT ALL. I really love it, which is why it's still in my garden, but it seems like I have to help just about every single bloom to open.

I mistakenly thought that was just a northern problem!

Yes, getting back to everybody's hangups. Is it me, or do I notice also the texture of the petals being a factor also? I'm sure you have noticed that some varieties have blooms with a soft, puffy substance or surface to the petals. While others have a harder, silky like, smooth surface that seems to alleviate the hang tendency to some degree. I have noticed that some have almost a feel like two separate layers to the bloom almost like, say, toilet tissue and have a definite puffy feel to the touch. These are the ones giving more problems. And those pleated edges are so fragile. Barely touch them and they break. Shrug!

I just bought Wonder Of It All this year, so it hasn't bloomed for me yet. I'll be able to report next year. Luckily, I haven't had any that hang up, at least not yet. Blinking

I like Wonder of it All and may have to get that one too despite the fact that it hangs up. Sometimes Darla Anita hangs up and I have to help her a bit.

Wonder Of It All is the only one that I have problems with, I do grow any of the others listed.
I found that WOIA kids do not have the same hang up issues, but I have to admit that I breed to lesser edges because of the hang up issue.
We don't see that kind of edge here in Wisconsin in a plant that will reliably live through the winters, so I take as much advantage as I can

I had a lot of problems with blooms hanging this year. Mostly, I think, because of cool mornings (we had a couple in the 40s in July!). Iron Man was a big problem. I only had a couple blooms that didn't hang. Competition was also trouble for me. The last scape seemed to do better than the first but still had to help it every morning.

One lady in Ky that has some intros under the names of TRENTON... says that hers has a notch that helps with the hanging up. Some had wide ruffles but I don't grow any of hers. I have visited her garden and she does grow several beauties!

Thanks for the kind words
I plan on retiring at the end of 2014, "plan" means if everything goes right.

If that happens I will have the time needed to line out, register, and have the time for setting up and selling plants.
Right now it takes all the spare time I have just selling seeds, I couldn't imagine digging sorting, cleaning, and shipping on top of that.

People are always telling me I should register this one or that, heck I sell seeds so the genetics are being passed along anyway.
People send me pictures of seedlings from seed they got from me, so I know that some good stuff is out there now.
I enjoy what I do, what else do I need. Big Grin

Oh, that A-72 is a beauty!

I love this thread, I have had a few hang upon opening, but nothing has done it consistently where I noted which one it was. I do hate when I try to help and they tear

Any suggestions on the best way to help a stuck bloom open? I've never had it happen to me before, but since I now have Wonder Of It All, it sounds like I'll have to deal with this next year.

Very nice daylily hybrids, Ed! Good luck with your future retirement plans!

I have a few that occasionally hang up. But it doesn't happen consistently. I, too, hate it when I try to help the bloom and it tears! Ugh!
