Julie,

I started my rose life by volunteering at Tiny Petals Nursery, so I have grown many of the roses bred by Dee Bennett. I also worked on a rose project for Ralph Moore and was thanked in roses, so I also have many of the roses he had bred.

Of the Dee Bennett minis, my favorite is 'Yantai', but I also really liked 'Violet Mist', 'Quiet Time', 'Old Fashioned Girl', 'My Sunshine', 'Something for Judy', 'Sweet Sue', 'Pink Porcelain', 'Cuddle Up' and 'Grace Seward' (photo below)

Of the Moore roses, favorites are 'Green Ice', 'Pinstripe', 'Beauty Secret', 'Sweet Chariot', 'Robi', 'Rainforest', 'Simplex', 'Easter Morning, 'Pink Poodle', 'Dresden Doll', 'Earthquake', 'Fair Molly', 'Halo Today', 'Splish Splash' and several more ... Smiling

The rose in my avatar is 'Grace Seward' and here's another photo of the rose that I really like:

Happy New Year, These babies are my passion. Most of my collection are of Ralph Moore creations ( Most favorite Playgold) I do have a few of Dee Bennett's and they are wonderful.

Lyn, you have been very fortunate to have been able to work with both of these fine breeders, I am sure you have very fond memories, just a little envy on my part.

So glad you started this thread Julie.

Best wishes for the New Year, James I tip my hat to you.

The Calgary Rose Society has a fundraiser on Mother's Day weekend every year: "Miniature Rose Sale". They are all named varieties and I usually buy at least 6. They are sold in a 4.5" pot size.

James,

Yes, I was lucky. Ralph Moore was a magnet for rose lovers all over California. He was an incredible man. He was still making crosses up until the time the nursery closed when he was 100 years old. Berling, of what is now called Burlington Roses, was his assistant for over 20 years and is carrying on his work as do the breeders he mentored.

I met him late in his career, but got to know many of the breeders he had mentored who have, in turn, been my mentors. Of course, I also had the opportunity to meet many of the people who just loved him and his roses.

Until he died, people from all over California and from other states, too, would gather at Sequoia Nursery to celebrate his birthday. All we did was talk roses.

Smiles,
Lyn

Wow! I'm so glad I asked!

Lyn @RoseBlush1 What an amazing experience to have had! I just planted 6 beauties from Burlington Roses & was gonna add a recommendation for them if there isn't one here already as a true professional. I love that you worked with names of people I read about every time I read the description of a lovely little rose! Tell us Moore!

James @TxTea I'm with you! I love these little guys & I know I've already squeezed way too many of them into my 18 or so pots & planters here on the patio but it's hard to stop. Just a little Hanky Panky?!

Think there's interest sufficient for a Miniature Rose forum?

Happy January!

Julie, no need to branch off from the Rose Forum, just create any thread you want here! This is a great mini rose thread you started and you can continue it as long as you want. Another subject? Just start a new thread. Thumbs up

I have a few minis, a favorite of mine was one created by Betty Jacobs @Betja

and I adore these as well:

Joanna - Eeyup! Every single one of those rose is at least 2-3 years old. Some of them are a little older. but I think that it's because they're next to the house.

Really nice Toni. I thought they were fairly established. They look very healthy and busy. I have about 8 mini's that have been in my garden for about 6 years...but they are not grouped all together like yours. Gourmet Popcorn grow to be about 3 feet tall now. I usually buy new ones every year and like to try new colours/varieties. Two years ago I got Coffee Bean (need to check the name to be sure) and it over wintered fine. Very cool colour

My Gourmet Popcorn is easily 3' tall. My plant gets whacked back quite a bit in spring during rose curculio season because I remove all of the blooms and buds on all of my roses to keep the dang bugs from breeding in the garden.

GP comes back very quickly.

Lyn

Well then @Calif_Sue I'll just stay right here & gush over your minis! I particularly love the Denver's Dream & your Solar Flair; I've been looking for a Sequoia Twist but haven't located one yet! Just planted plump little guys from Burlington Roses - I just love watching them grow!

I've got two miniatures I can't find in the database - is there a protocol for suggesting their inclusion?

If you go to the homepage of the database, you can click on "Add a new plant to the database." Just enter the genus (Rosa) on the "Accepted botanical name" line and the cultivar name on the "Cultivar" line.

Or you can just tell me their names and I'll create the entries for you. Smiling

I added Little Meghan - I can't wait to add pictures of her when she's photo ready -- and I tried to add my other, Rosa 'Si' - but the system says it's there & I saw it. When I try to add it as my plant, I can't. I suspect it doesn't have enough letters for a proper search. Too small, too few letters. Such a lovely teeny little bush right now, but it's already sending out leaves so small it's hard to imagine the tiny buds that'll sit atop 'em soon enough!

Anyhoo: I figured it out after I asked (it says: add a plant...) Shall I start a dumb question thread?

Asking questions isn't dumb, Julie. Smiling

The easiest way to find a rose is to look for it alphabetically instead of using the search function. Go to the main rose page and click on "Browse the full list of roses." This will take you to a page where you'll see letters at the top. Click on "S" and look for 'Si' alphabetically.

I'm excited that you'll be adding a photo. We don't have any in that entry yet.

The easiest way to add something to your own plant list is to go to the entry, scroll down to the blue block saying "Add this plant to your list," and click on that:

Rose (Rosa 'Si')
