Jasmine 'Madison' has seed pods. So impressed with the silky little "parachute" attached to each seed and how perfectly they lay side by side in the narrow pod. I am guessing this is meant to be blown by the wind for each seed to germinate in a new location. Guessing again, are they easy to germinate in potted soil so I can see if they begin to grow?

Hi Carol. Yes, they are easily grown in average, well drained soil. They need a regular watering schedule in order to establish a deep root system. They can be trained on a trellis, fence, etc. or left to grow as a ground cover.

I've never tried growing Jasmine from seed, but have had good luck with cuttings. Can you post pictures? I'd love to see it, and I noticed that this variety is not in our database…*hint-hint*

Goodness...such quick replies! When posting pictures are you meaning the seed pod or the plant? There are more seed pods on the vine but the ones left haven't split yet. I have tried using the hard wood cutting method but I am afraid I am a poking in the ground and waiting to see what happens gardener and nothing happened. LOL I have never posted pictures so it will probably involve getting my husband's help.

In trying to do cuttings…I would take some semi-hard wood…some of the current season/newer growth, then following Tee's recommendation of an average well drained soil.

Carol, I rooted some cuttings of Confederate jasmine last year. Here's how I did it. I took cuttings more toward the tip --- say semi hardwood type in May. I filled a pot with pearlite & watered it well then used a pencil to make a hole for each cutting (after stripping all but the top 2 rows of leaves). I stuck the moistened stem of each cutting in powdered cinnamon then stuck them down into the holes I had made in the pearlite. Firmed the pearlite against the stems. Watered again. Put the pot on our shaded back porch that gets lots of light but only about 1 hour of sun per day. It took them 2 months to show new growth leaves. They had then rooted. You will need to water the cuttings once in a while but don't let the pearlite get & stay soggy.

Thank you, Ann, and also Tara for instructions on properly rooting a cutting of this jasmine. Even though I am fascinated by the seeds, I will put this info on my calendar and try again in the spring to root a cutting...if successful will be much quicker than planting seeds. I like this particular variety as it seems more cold hardy than the one (not sure of its name but different) in my more sunny back yard. At least until this year as we got down to 16 and that's cold for us so it has a little leaf burn.
