The person identifying that tree to me must have been mis-informed. The pears on that tree looked more the shape of wild Avacados like the ones you see growing all over Puerto Rico, very fat around without much of a taper of the fruit before it's connection to the stem. They were also green and had no brown to their skin as do those in the photo in your link. Someday I'll have to get back down there and get one of those pears for a trip to my agricultural extension office.
