Don't forget the nifty 'control-f' that allows you to search any thread for a specific key word. If you're interested in a coupon for a specific item that could come in handy without having to scroll too much.

Oh, I certainly understand why dave doesn't want to just jump in and make a whole new forum without making sure there's interest. I do like the idea, tho. Be sort of like going to that website "retail me not" which has saved me a few $$$ on occasion. Smiling

@dave I would love to see a separate Coupon Forum or Goodie.

It is getting very cumbersome to keep up on the deals with just one thread, and also there actually seems to be two threads going. the other is in Perennials

If there is a COUPON section I would like to suggest in the title has to be name of company and expiration date. That way no one will need to waste time reading expired threads and no one has to remember to go back and mark them closed. The details of the deal can be in the body of the message

@jvdubb, it does seem like this thread is getting a lot of interest, which does tell me we should go ahead and split it out.

So, do I make a custom Goodies app for this, or will we be happy just creating a "Garden Coupons" forum?

My vote would be for a forum. But I'm not picky. If it is a Goodie is there a spot to mark it to "watch" like the individual forums?

No, if it's a Goodie app then it'll behave more like the Recommendations feature.

I like the idea of a forum in that the person who posted the coupon code could then mark it closed when it expired, and you could select to view open threads only. But if it were a Goodie, then maybe we'd be able to look for coupons by category? Or sort by expiration date? And we'd be able to tuck the Goodie in our custom menu bar. Smiling

You haven't missed anything.

Well, I posed the question about whether we should make this a forum or a goodies app and only got 3 responses, so I'm still a bit undecided on the right direction.

Other priorities have taken me away from this in the past few weeks. I do plan to revisit it relatively soon.

Addendum: If we do just want a dedicated forum, I could set that up right now. If we want a goodies app that would take time to design and program. So maybe I should just setup a forum for it.

Confused Maybe I am lame but is this the place to look? It seems we have two places/threads going at the same time to talk about this.
Personally, I still question the long term need for this as some offers are good for 'one day only' and won't be very current by the time some members get around to reading about what they missed. (Just my opinion.)

@Danita, what do you think about the forum approach? Then the right approach would be, in my opinion, to have a new thread for each company and any new offers can be added to that company's thread.

I like having a new thread for each offer, and would ask the poster to put the expiration in the subject header

Could there be some uniformity to the subject headers?
Maybe date first?

I vote for forum, with a thread for each offer, with an option to close the thread as the offer expires.

I prefer a forum that I can put in my watch list, so I always know when a new coupon is posted. The problem with the close option is that people won't close them, just like in the plant ID forum. Perhaps if there is a moderator, that can monitor threads and also has the option to close them also. I think the threads should be closed to comments. l think maybe the moderator could put a single sticky at the top and consolidate each new coupon post in order of expiration date, and keep the list clean by deleting them as they expire.

Hmm, a forum where every thread is just one post. That might require custom code.

I wonder if it would be practical to set up such a forum where each thread is "closed to new posts" as soon as it's created.

BUT maybe also assign an automatic thread-delete-date when it was created. The person opening the thread would fill it out with the expiration date of the coupon. (Also custom code and not a standard forum feature.)

I guess that doesn't address the case where one company might post multiple coupons with different expiration dates. Unless the poster just listed the LAST expiration date.

How about a website that "always" gives free shipping on orders over $xxx? Should that be listed as a permanent "coupon"? I would lean towards thinking "no", but would defer to any other opinion.
