I accidentally broke one of my Artabotrys hexapetalus seeds in half and was astonished to see the inside! At first I thought there must be bunches of seeds in here because of the 'compartments' but that couldn't be right because I germinated one last year and only one plant came up. After looking at the pictures I took I realized that there was a central core of which the 'fins' were connected to and no indication of any kind of margin that they would break off later. A mystery indeed.

Cool. Looks like a filter, or something Smiling
Walnuts also have some separating walls inside... I know!
Mom used to make me crack nuts... and sometimes it was difficult getting all those thin but hard pieces.
Nothing like this of course, but still.

I won't pretend I understand the big words in this one, but here is a link mentioning the anatomy of the seed: http://link.springer.com/artic...

Thanks for the link .. I sort of understood it! Lots of words I had to look up too. I'm thinking it said that the structures 'walls', endotesta contain starch grains which direct it toward the center during germination. I'm thinking a primitive cotyledon of sorts? I'm wondering what kinds of evolutional pressures created this seed!

The only part I understood is that it has something to do with helping the seed take up water. The abstract provides some key words that can be used to do more searches. (Maybe I should have gone to college!) Rolling on the floor laughing

I looked up a lot of the words and that wasn't actually easy! And the definitions were kind of murky (at least to me).
