I accidentally broke one of my Artabotrys hexapetalus seeds in half and was astonished to see the inside! At first I thought there must be bunches of seeds in here because of the 'compartments' but that couldn't be right because I germinated one last year and only one plant came up. After looking at the pictures I took I realized that there was a central core of which the 'fins' were connected to and no indication of any kind of margin that they would break off later. A mystery indeed.

Human beings, who are almost unique in having the ability to learn from the experience of others, are also remarkable for their apparent disinclination to do so.
