For a spider plant, generally when it is root-bound. Let the soil dry out a bit, tip the pot upside-down, covering the plant base/soil with your other hand, gently shake the pot. The root-ball should just pop out. If you see lots of roots and almost no soil, it needs to be re-potted in a pot approximately 2" wider than the one it was in.

i just looked at the roots i dont need to put it in a new pot for about 4 or 5 months so im all good on that plant
