So much talk about tomatoes I thought I'd give it a try this year.
Better Boy.
1 gal. planted with organic soil and my dirt. Do you like my pretty pink cages? Ridiculously pricey but I liked them!

I must say that after I got these in the ground I realized they are in the line of lawn sprinklers. Not to worry... I rarely use them. Lawn seems to do just fine. Go figga. Confused

Well, you picked a good one for your first time. Better Boy is a hybrid mid-season tomato that has some disease resistance built in. It is an indeterminate plant that will typically produce fairly large crops of fruit up to 1 pound. I grew a Better Boy the first year I was in Arizona and it started off the season like gangbusters. Then it got hot...and I didn't know at the time what was wrong with the plant. Still growing but no more tomatoes. So I pulled it and went on to other things.

I can't believe how naive I was about growing vegetables in a desert climate. I soon realized that I was spoiled growing vegetables in Northern California. I thought I was a pretty good vegetable gardener born from years of experience. Now I realize that I was blessed with incredible soil, excellent water and outstanding weather. Nobody that put any effort at all into to it could miss with those resources.

Anyway Susie, keep us posted on your progress and if you need any help there are several of us here that may be able to help you out.

I'll surely keep you posted!
Dan, remember all of those huge trucks in Sacto hauling the tomatoes to canneries? How funny the roads looked during picking season. Tomatoes strewn everywhere?

Tons of tomatoes laying on the road shoulders...especially at the intersections where the trucks tilted a little as they went around the corner.

Susie, did you know that Clooney starred in The Return of the Killer Tomatoes? Probably not a film he talks up much, you think!

Today I took a pic of my too Bad Boys. The one on the left gets less sun than the one on the right. About 15 sets of viable tomatoes. The one on the right gets more sun and has about 5 viable set tomatoes. They get the same water. No leaves are touching the ground. Planted the same day. The one on the right did well in the beginning but has pooped out. I was thinking of replacing it but I kinda want to see what happens to it.
