Check out this crazy thing! I've had this plant for two years and have never had a bloom, so I had decided to give it to my neighbor -- and as soon as I made that decision there suddenly appeared this tiny little scape so I couldn't do it without seeing a bloom first! And here is the bloom -- certainly not spectacular, but it is a bloom that developed over the winter and I do like the twinkle eye so I'll keep it for now.

It's pretty Betty, and I like the pattern too. Smiling I guess you could say it's an early bloomer!

If you look at the other pictures of PURPLE SOMBRERO in our database, this one really looks nothing like them. But I just thought I'd entertain you-all with a bloom, even though it's a pretty sad representation. But warmer weather is coming...

Looks like it's going to develop a little more of an edge, and keep the eye pattern. The pics in the data base are a little more pink, but I bet yours will get there. Thumbs up

He should. A good looker.

Me too, Lyle. Love that one.

Betty, isn't it weird that maiden blooms can often
look so different from what we expect. However, grats
on an actual bloom after all this time, and the first for
the year. I'm in a overly zealous mood for spring blooms,
so count me entertained. Hurray!

Thanks! And later in the afternoon it did look better and seemed to have a little more color, so there's hope. And I must say I was thrilled to actually have a daylily bloom after these long months!

You know, just about my favorite daylily is MARINA DEL REY -- it actually looked pink and blue in the garden last year! But the first bloom was very disappointing, and then each week it just got better and better as the weather warmed up, and the last picture I took really showed the blue in the eye pattern for the first time. I really love it!

But it did take several weeks to finally show the blue.

Wow, your Marina del Rey certainly does show blue.
Such a pretty pattern.
And I'm so glad to see your photo of it as I have it
coming in April. If mine looks like that, it will be one
of my favorites too. Now I know to give it time to
get established before it shows its stuff.

Well, if you decide to introduce it I'd like to be at the top of the list! And would that be called a halo eye?

Betty, as soon as it blooms this spring I will give it a final look, if the sepals shows the extended eye pattern then it would be registered and eye, and edge.

I have a scape up on a seedling that is from the cross below. I like the EE (Early Early) daylilies they always look best here in my warm winter climate.

I can't wait until we have scapes. I'm sure the new arrivals will have scapes way before the ones already here since we have had such a cold winter.

Thanks Michele,
Sometimes a good chill is good for daylilies and they rebound even quicker, I hope your daylilies respond well to the warm spring weather.

Last year by this date I had 29 daylilies in bloom. This year none of those have even shown scapes yet! Crying It looks like this year's bloom season is going to be at least a month later than last year. Hope it's a good one!

The 2nd bloom of 2014 showed up today - Yellow Bouquet, a small bright yellow double. It's and older variety, from '87, I think. I purchased it late last year, so this is its first time blooming for me, and it is a bit smaller than it should be. Hopefully, that will change.

The wind was blowing so hard this morning, I'm surprised I got a decent picture.
