This is the Potinara (Pot.) genus, an orchid genus. The plant is Pot. Island Peach 'Tangerine Dream'. Please add this genus.

Just to help along, please:
here is the (now) accepted name for your Potinara Island Peach
http://apps.rhs.org.uk/horticu...
I would use the RHS to add Orchid hybrids to the Database, no?

edited to add -
wouldn't "XPotinara" imply this is a natural hybrid? It is not. Also - a search will have a hard time finding this.

Sorry, just my 2 cents…

Got it. I changed my records but all my labels will still have the Pot. as the genus. I have several hundred orchid labels that were Blc., Pot., Schom., etc. as received from the grower/hybridizer. It is simply too much time, trouble, and expense to re-do them all. Perhaps I will just re-do them as new labels are needed. Practically no one in the orchid community has changed the original names and according to the two growers/hybridizers in Hawaii, they don't plan on doing so.

It is hardly worth the effort to list what I have in the data base. That data base is just not built to list orchids. Also, it would just take me too long to cross-check my 50-75 (or more!) varieties with the RHS, which in its self, is not an easy chore if I don't know what name changes have occurred.

Ken, I do the same thing. As hobbyists we are probably better off using Blc, Lc, etc. simply for better communication. Especially since the RHS isn't really done assigning a "final" Genus name, it keeps on changing.
However, I think if we wish to have a "correct" Orchid Data base here on ATP, we need to use the new nomenclature to enter our Orchids.

Thanks for the link Ursala. This is all so confusing with the International Orchid Register accepting names which are contrary to taxonomists.
These links from IPNI and Kew show a different hybrid cross which was published in 2007 in the Orchid Review! Perhaps a subsequent issue revised the name +/or cross. These discrepancies are common with Orchids so any additional information you can provide would be appreciated.

Grrrrrrr! I'll just let others worry about that (listing in data base). Since that site was never truly built to list orchids, with all the crazy names and nomenclature, it is just too cumbersome for me to list mine.

@drdawg and @Ursala, there is a way to list both sets of names so a search will work!!

The ASA ("Also Sold As") field would work fine for that. Orchids are the most difficult of all plants to properly organize into a database. I think the harder you try to get it right, the more difficult it becomes. I don't mind using the ASA to try to make things easier for us.

OK, let me be sure I understand, Dave. I don't even have to list a genus, species/grex, or cultivar? Just list the orchid plant in the ASA field? That seems too easy, so I probably don't have it right. Sticking tongue out

No, you need a valid genus and species (and cultivar name, if appropriate.)

After that, if there are variations on the name you can use the ASA field to also list those.
