Has anyone tried going chives here. When is the best time to plant? I'm thinking of planting, but more for the flower than the food.

I planted some in March I think. Still harvesting but fewer new growth daily. I'll continue to water just to see how / if it continues to provide. Oregano and Italian parsley are doing great. Of course, the dill bit the dust about 2 weeks ago. I love chives in my salad. I always all a fair amount of herbs.

I love fresh Chives on baked potatoes with sour cream ....mmmmmmm!

So do they come back when the weather cools down, or do you have to replant every year?

I'm guessing I'll have to replant. I'm going to let them go to seed to see what happens... they may die before that reproductive moment, however.

So they never reached blooming status for you? When did you plant them?

I think it was late Feb early Mar. Probably too late.

I've planted them in October and maybe Feb/March before... They really won't last through the heat for me and I always replant where they were with something else, so not sure if they come back or not - lol... You can always grow some in a pot on a sunny windowsill if you want them year round and you have the perfect windowsill. They grow well like that!

Oh, and the seeds take a long time to sprout sometimes. More than once I've planted them and then planted something else there because there was nothing growing there. Then lo and behold I have chives growing in the bean patch!

When we lived in Sacramento we had some growing in a pot and they died off. I didn't replant the pot with anything and after several months the chives began to grow again. I think they just went dormant for a while. We have tried to grow chives here but have only had mediocre success. So now we snip a few of the smaller green onion tops to use on baked potatoes.

That's what I currently do Dan. I was intrigued by there purple flowers, that was why I as tempted to try growing them. :)

I have garlic chives that have been growing in the same spot for 3 or 4 years. Just planted some garlic from a friend's garden and left it to grow, grow, grow. It's great. That garden gets watered with a soaker hose on a timer. Currently twice a day, 5am and 5pm for 10 minutes.
