I still have broccoli and cabbage seedlings to transplant sometime this week.
Later this month I'll start my long season tomato plants and this year I'm going to start pepper plants early too.

I'm inspired to plant my lettuce seeds. Last year I put them in flower pots with other plants... the birds in my garden like to pull up seedlings. If they're hidden at least they have a chance.

I direct sowed last year and had the best results. For me, I'm not successful with seed starts in the house or in small containers.

Dan, the greens of your beets and turnips coupled with spinach could make great vegetable tarts.

We use them as baby greens in salads too.

Inspiring, Dan! I'd better get busy. What is Tyee spinach? And did you soak the pea seeds before planting? I love sweet peas but I have yet to be successful with a crop.

Tyee is a hybrid...I think I got it from Gurney's.

I soaked the sugar snap pea seeds in paper towels for 72 hours. I only intended to do it over night but that old cliche "Stuff Happens" changed my plans. About half had already sprouted by the time I planted them.

I don't do sweet peas anymore. I don't have the room to plant enough to make it worth while. Sugar Snaps (edible pods) are very sweet and the yield per square foot is excellent.

LOL, they're all "sweet" to me, Dan. And I haven't been able to get flowers or peas. Not sure what happens; maybe the birds get all the little seedlings.

I plant peas with no intention of bringing them into the house. I eat them off the vine. Same with my little mini-yellow pear tomatoes. Yum. They never see the interior of my house.

That happens to a lot of our sugar snaps and cherry tomatoes. Garden Candy!

When I got home from work yesterday I planted 9 broccoli seedlings. As I was inspecting the rest of the garden looking for any hail damage I saw that the beets, turnips, Nevada lettuce, arugula, mustard and radishes have sprouted after only 3 days!

This morning I checked on everything before I left and the sugar snaps are breaking gound too. I hope this is an omen for a successful fall garden!

They sound quite eager to start producing!

Way to go Dan! I will be planting this weekend. Been holding off due to the hot days but now the weather is just about perfect. Will have to harvest my now leafless from the hail sweet taters first - lol...

Crickets are eating the seedlings as fast as they come up. Last night they got more of the lettuce and nearly all of the remaining turnips. The broccoli plants are looking a little chewed up too. And to make matters worse one of my neighbors friendly cats picked my carrot patch as a litter box.

So today I replanted the carrots, turnips, lettuce, mustard, kohlrabi, Butterstick squash and filled in the blank spots in the sugar snap peas. Tomorrow I will have diatomaceous earth for the creepy crawlies, chemical (organic if possible) warfare stuff for the crickets and my grandson's BB gun for the cats.

Before anyone goes nuts on me, the BB gun is very weak and I doubt it would break skin at point blank range. I'm hoping however it will sting just enough to make the cats think twice about choosing my vegetable garden as a latrine. For the record I don't necessarliy dislike cats nor am I particularly fond of them. I just don't want them tearing up my garden so they can have a comfortable toilet.
