I have looked for other examples of this aberation but have had little to find. Ive seen one other iris that had double everything and it was a single event on one plant. This clump has several (5) so far that have four falls. I was trying to find out this ones name and took some photos. Anyone know it. What I would realy love to see other examples in irises if anyone has pics?

It occurs pretty routinely here in Standard Dwarf and Intermediate irises. I think it is related to fluctuations in temperature while the buds are developing, but that's just a guess.

Leslieray, one little SDB called 'Cup of Joy' has six standards and six falls most of the time. It is pale shades of pink with blue beards if I recall. I do not have it anymore.

I see it once in a while but I only take pictures of what I consider near perfect blossoms. SDB Puddy Tat does it often.....so I don't like it much.

I have an old purple iris called 'flat broke' that both the standards and falls are flat and droop. looks like six falls.

It looks like a trait that some are breeding for. I just uploaded this from Blue J iris, (they gave me permission last year to add their photos) the owners hybridized it

Three standards and three falls will always be iris to me. I will not cull a brat that shows out but I would not buy an iris for this trait. Just me.

Enjoys or suffers cold winters
The development of extra flower parts has been linked to cold when the bud is developing as Kent says. I don't care for that as it usually means the plant is tender, a - in cold climates. Some of the TBs are a novelty genetic trait & are known as 'flatties'. 'Six Pack' is one which I can remember. Personally I wouldn't breed from the trait.

Yah -- I don't care for the flatties at all either, Lucy. To me they look *sick* -- like they didn't have the strength for the petals to stand up.

Count me in for 3 nicely held standards and 3 wide flared falls. Love the symmetry...

Thank you for the mutant pix. Quite incredable! We did have an extra period of prolonged dry/cold this winter but there are several clump of this particular iris and only one has this difference, The pictures i submited were awful colorwise. Must have had a filter on. Here is a beter one. Love 'Forward Thinking' and 'Pokeman' . Double everything would seen to me to be very very desirable. Then one I have seen was a spectacular but singular event. Thanks so much.
