Gardens... should be like lovely, well-shaped girls: all curves, secret corners, unexpected deviations, seductive surprises and then still more curves. ~H.E. Bates, A Love of Flowers

Marie/Brittany -
thanks! It's in the ground. Barb gave it to me when it was about 18 inch tall stick. It was indoors for about 4 months then in same pot in total shade. I re-potted it and put it in morning sun and it did well. Moved it to no Winter sunlight, filtered Summer sunlight (about 4 hours) It's now in the ground on the north side of an east west running wall. I'm pretty happy with progress. It's loaded with leaves and I'm hoping they make it to Fall when they may go through seasonal colors

Did you know we have a Japanese Maple Cubit. No activity since 5/2010 but there must be some info there.
Alan, that is one beautiful JP. Very unique. I could see it in a Redwood Stand (Northern California type terrain)
Here's a pic of my JP in the backyard. There is a volunteer tree of some sort in the front of this bed so I've had to take side shots. ... you get the idea.

I'm sure you're right. I didn't amend my garden soil much. I have clay and work in little home compost every now and then. It gets a spray of water twice a day and a good deep drip about every two weeks. I don't know if any water comes from my neighbors yard.... it's against a shared block fence. I use Miracle Gro or Fish Emulsion.... occasionally.
I have to japanese maples growing. One looks not so good and one not too bad. Both in the ground. No clue on their names. I picke done up in Cali and the other was ordered online some where but both were pretty smal plants . One is finally after 2 years putting on some growth.
Thanks Alan you just had to show such a beautiful varigate done that in my brilliant mind will think I need!! I cannot wait to see how it does for you!!
Susie yours looks great and gives me some hope!

Mine grew VERY slowly the first two years... but, poor baby had been through a lot. Mail order, repot, new house, repot, outside, moved, put in ground. When I put it in this location about two years ago it was 1/2 the size. Now it's taller 5 feet and broader. Healthier too. Only morning sun.

Yea, I'd stick with the Osmocote. Tried and true. Fish Emul. too. Though the "fragrance" may permeate the space. I would think that if you keep it in a pot, inside, I'd keep the fertilizer doses low. I'd be inclined to soak the pot (if possible, size wise) in water. as needed. Let it nearly dry between soakings. You know...like soaking in a nice hot Japanese tub.

I THINK it's variegated pittosporum. I keep it about 4 ft tall, shrub-like. It's odd. Some branches grow a solid green, some all white, mostly variegated. Hardy.
