OK - need some assistance...

I know a lot of you don't grow grass, but I want to plant an area in the backyard where the yard meets the patio. I'm guessing it's about 10' x 30'. The pups need a place to play and romp and right now it's dirt and they get so dirty and track that dirt into the house.

I have never planted grass here, so I need to know the when, how and what kind - lol. It will be a pretty high traffic area so no sissy grass will do;o)

I look forward to your suggestions and advice...

Oh, and it's such a small area I'm not too concerned about water needs...

I haven't grown any grass since the 60's so no help here.
The reason most people fail instead of succeed is because they give up what they want most for what they want at the moment.

I have about 4 kinds of grass in my backyard that I am leasing...one of them is great...sturdy and it doesn't seem to grow at all...no clue what it is but someone will help. I love the look of grass...just don't like the water bill and the mowing.

Bobsod is what you want Kelly. It's what most of the HD's normally sell as sod, too. This time of year you'd need to get it from Western Sod, though.
http://www.westernsod.com/
They sell overseeded sod, too, but that may not be ready yet.

Um, I assume this is a sunny spot? bobsod has not been able to handle less than sunny spots for us and we are going to to have sow a mix into our front yard.

These folks seem to be the go-to's for lawn grass info. http://www.westernsod.com/

I recently saw Bobsod at HD, but a couple of years ago when we bought it there, it was two different types of grass, both labeled Bobsod.

And some more info: http://www.phoenixtropicals.co...

After many years, St. Augustine has almost pushed Bermuda out of the front yard. I say 'almost' because I don't think you could entirely kill the stuff with a nuke. Personally, I love St. Augustine. It's springy, very tough so it holds up to lots of traffic and it's pretty.

Great info peeps - thanks! I will check the sod folks out. Research has led me to believe St. Augustine will be the summer lawn... Lynn, it is a full sun spot until late afternoon so should be perfect!

You guys rock!

I don't know much about it but you might want to look at this one too

Dan, my daughter tried zoysia and so did I. No dice; it all died. I thought it would be the perfect grass, i.e., no mowing! Sadly, no growing...

Too hot here? Or just lousy soil conditions?

I wonder if that is what I have in my backyard in patches (the zoysia) since it is pretty and never needs mowing.

Dan, I suspect it was the heat. Could have been the soil, but I doubt it since other grass grows there.

This one might be worth looking at too. Supposed to be heat and drought tolerant.
