I have a memorial garden planned which will be populated mostly with daylily and iris, primarily because of their easy care and the so-cool names. I can do a search with either an attribute to a person or their name, and come up with something. "Louder Still" daylily for my boss/friend, "Stacy Ruth" iris for my inlaws (their first names), "Whispering Angels" daylily for the unborn babies, etc. It's been a fun project to research.
I want to live in a world where the chicken can cross the road without its motives being questioned.

Natalie - I'm confused.... I thought unnamed (and unregistered) seedlings were No ID plants? What is the difference? For an un-named hybrid it is called a seedling or a child? I thought a seedling was a "young" plant, not necessarily specific to a hybrid? Someone explain, please.

Deb - That is a lovely idea!

Deb, I love that idea!

Becky, basically, a NOID is just a plant that you don't know the name of, as in you haven't identified what it's registered name is. This can be said for every kind of plant, not just daylilies. If you have an iris, but don't know which iris it is, you would call it a NOID iris. Same for clematis, tulips, lilacs, or whatever. If they have a registered name, or "official" name, but you don't know what it is, you would refer to it as a NOID (No ID) plant.

A daylily seedling is totally different, since it hasn't yet been registered. It's one of a kind. Without registering it, it should always be referred to as a seedling, regardless of its age, so that others know that it hasn't been registered. If it was a registered plant, and you lost the name, it would be a NOID daylily.

Does that make sense?

Yes! Thanks! I didn't know that! Thanks for clarifying that for me, Natalie!

Hybridizers description :

Lavender cream bi-color spider with chevron patterned eye and green throat
Several scapes in 2010 had over 55 buds. Has the highest bud count of any daylily I have ever grown. Passes on branching
and bud count and early bloom to its offspring. Fertile both ways. Vigorous----fast increaser. .Makes small-medium size plants. Has been tested in Zone 4. Choice! I can't say enough about this one.
Dedicated to all those wonderful pets that touch our hearts.
Can be used to breed earlies,bi-colors,spiders/UFO's,patterns or just to enhance bud count and branching.

I have gotten 2 DLs because 1, they were pretty and 2, the name. American Revoltion (my DH is ex-military) and Alpha Centauri (we're both astronomy buffs). No blooms to show yet.

I've purchased named, registered varieties for particular people.

Beyond that, no comment and I do hope they enjoy their blooms anyway. "Lies and Lipstick" was one I particularly favored. "Crotchless Panties" was unavailable but we still speak garden-ese if someone has this offering? I'm a buyer!

To make a matched set...

Lol

I have seeds started from 2 DLs that I had to start together. They won't come true but you never know...Innocent Bystander and Substantial Evidence. I used to work in the retail security business.

Butter Dish, Cherry Cheeks, Chili Spice, and Eggplant Electricity I bought for both the look and the names. Don't know why, but I like food-related names.

Rocket City I bought solely for the name, being a fan of Team Rocket from Pokemon. Makes me think of a city of Team Rocket agents.

Ferengi Gold I also bought for the name, and to replace my daylily Starstruck that died this winter (they look basically the same, although FG is yellow instead of gold). I'm a big Star Trek fan so I'll be keeping my eyes out for more cheap Star Trek-themed daylilies next year.

I just remembered that I bought Bark At Me last fall. I loved it right away because of the name, but wasn't going to get it if I didn't like the bloom. Luckily I liked the bloom enough to buy it! I think right now I just love it for the name.
