There was only assembler and the Void.
Even then, when only the High Priests of Assembler could use computers, there was already a heartfelt desire for that, and a mythical ASM opcode reserved for it:

We wanted it even more than the second-most popular ASM opcode:
hcf - - - - Halt and Catch Fire
