By dave
April 29, 2014

In today's podcast we talk about weeds. What to do about weeds? Is there such a thing as a good weed? What weeds can be tolerated, and even used to your benefit? And for the rest, how do you get rid of them? We cover all that, plus the usual segments, along with a bonus pinboard of bad ideas, in today's episode!

I planted about 5 individual plants of this and now I have about 200! I didn't realize it has extensive runners when I planted it. It is taking over in my native/prairie garden. Does anyone else struggle with this? How have you dealt with it?

Anderwood. I don't have experience with this particular plant, but I have found there are essentially 2 ways to deal with runners. 1. cardboard and/or black plastic. cover with mulch if you can't stand the look. 2. (for the big runners, like trumpet vine or Asian wisteria). Cut off at the base, and paint the stump -- around the cambium layer just inside of the bark with systemic herbicide such as glyphosate.

Most runners will only surface again, if you try to pull them or cultivate them if any plant parts are left below the surface. A third method would be solarazation with clear plastic, but Ive never been able to get that technique to work for me.

I listened for 17 minutes and no mention yet of weeds! So I'm out the door to start pulling weeds...
