I am hoping someone can give some insight as to why the bark on my flowering cherry tree is splitting. It did not flower very well this year, and now I am wondering if this problem could have something to do with it.

After looking at pictures from last year, I see that it was already beginning to split then. Can it be saved? It sure was pretty last year.
