Well, I had previously identified this euphorbia as a lactea cristata but have been told I'm wrong. One person is telling me they think it's a meloformis f. cristata and another person swears it's a kibwezensis! I'm at my wits' end. I suppose it really doesn't matter (for a rose by any other name...) BUT I want to enter it into the LACSS Cactus & Succulent show next month & correct identification counts. I'm uploading a couple of different images so multiple sides can be viewed. Anyone able to identify this absolutely?

It's not a lactea; I'm convinced of that. I'm leaning towards kibwezensis. If I'm wrong I'll just take the hit in points.

There's a photo of a crested E. kibwezensis in this blog. Fourth photo.

Kim,
Still think your right about kibwezensis. I have both and I'm learning towards kibwezensis. Very nice one at that. Some are more compact than others.

Well, the jury is in: it IS a kibwezensis! I took a drive to Pasadena in the scorching heat (no mean feat without air conditioning) for a field trip to the California Cactus Center. I can't say enough good things about this family owned and operated nursery which has been in business for over 35 years. Before I got too carried away with oohing and aahing over much coveted caudiciforms I asked a couple of the intensely knowledgeable Thongthiraj sisters if they could identify which species of Euphorbia I had from photos. So it is confirmed. EUPHORBIA KIBWEZENSIS.

And here it is staged...

I only hope mine stays in the darft stage. They could grow very tall. Like 12 feet or more. I hope that is in the wild not in pots. Mine right now is 3" by 4". One big crest. My latea crest is about 1 ft. tall and wide and weighs about 20 lbs. What's it made of iron?
Also my prayers out to all those near those fires out west. And flooding in the central. What's going on here. So far, in the east, just a little cold spell down to the 40's. Hope all this maddness soon comes to an end.

Well Stush, when I pulled it out of it's wide bowl (pic #1) that I just planted it in a couple of months ago, I thought, "oh hell no way that's going to fit" into that small 5 in. deep one in the last photo. First, I had to hose off all the dirt from the roots just so I could see what I could hack off. There was even new growth -- you can see what I felt was mature enough to keep, in the bottom right front of the plant. I left it wrapped like a baby in a towel in the shade for a day to let the cuts harden off. I potted it up yesterday and am keeping it in the enclosed patio in my house. Without pot or dirt the thing still weighed about 25 pounds. It's about 11" tall & 11" wide. I've been growing this one for about 10-12 years.

Stush, it's a monthly meeting. I'll take some photos next month. I'll be entering it in the CSSA show next weekend. I'm going to be clerking for some of the judges so I'll be there all weekend and will definitely take lots of photos.
