I often quote Ralph Moore because he was one of my mentors. I was also mentored by him through my primary rose mentor, Kim Rupert. Ralph had the ability to speak volumes in just a few words. One of the things he said quite often was, "If there is a way for a rose to grow and survive, the rose will find it."

Kim said that this was Ralph's way of telling people not to underestimate roses. They will grow in spite of our mistakes in caring for them.

Tonight I found a sucker from an own root rose that I had transplanted last spring. I piled a bunch of rocks I intend to use for the border of the bed in the low spot left behind so that I wouldn't trip and fall into another rose because I wasn't watching where I was stepping.

Since I didn't know the plant was there, I haven't watered or fed this tiny plant since I transplanted the rose last spring.

I just had to share. The first two photos are of the sucker and the last photo is of the transplanted rose.

Don't you just love it when a small plant like that is rescued and grows up strong and healthy.

Funny how we coddle some plants and they struggle and others, well, they seem to have a survival gene built into them. I have one rose half hidden under a large pineapple guava shrub, discovered it after we moved in when it sent out a lovely coral pink bloom the first spring. Forgot about it until the next spring and again this spring, each time when it sends out a single bloom. It does not get any water other than what it got during a rain shower, nothing, all summer long and it's not gopher caged either, yet, there it is.
Guess it deserves digging up and planting in a more appropriate spot where it will get regular water. Bet it will just reward me with more than one bloom at a time, unless it won't like being coddled.

I was in a state of awe when I saw this tiny little plant.

The rose is a test rose that I was growing for a breeder located in Palm Springs. It handles the heat in his area just fine, but the blooms fried quickly in my garden. It has beautiful foliage, gorgeous sepals, it is a strong plant and quite drought tolerant for a rose. It has been disease free in my garden.

This rose is only being used for breeding, for now, and is being tested for introduction to commerce. The rose has not been registered.

Last year, Hortico listed the rose in their inventory, but it wasn't this rose ... I noticed that it is no longer in their inventory.

For now, I am going to move the rocks away from the plant so that it doesn't get fried by reflected heat and when the heat wave expected this week passes, I'll transplant it to where it can get some afternoon shade. It has worked so hard to survive, I just have to site it where I think it will be happier.
