Daylily (Hemerocallis 'Thundercat')
I want to complete my new front daylily bed with "Thundercat" but my husband won't let me spend thirty bucks on one flower (particularly considering how much I've spent already this spring) so I'm hoping to find a cheaper look-alike somewhere. Does anyone here know of something that looks similar to this?

Carnival in Mexico isn't quite as "pointy" but has a similar look!

I agree Carnival in Mexico is quite a lovely look-alike.

Here's another that has some similarity as well:

A quick net search shows it may be available around $15 ... about the same price as you'd pay for a Lowe's or Home Depot plant purchase ... Whistling

Also found this one, but it's even MORE expensive.

Looks like "Wild and Wonderful" may be my best bet. Lovey dubby I've found it as low as $14. Problem is that none of the sellers in the $14/$15 dollar range accept money orders, so my search continues.

Ooo, good one Debra! Hurray!

Also, looking at parentage and offspring sometimes leads to look-alikes (though I could not find any under $20 from some of the newer intros). This one was reasonably priced:

And, for this one, at least one sellers is offering it at $5 for a single fan (doesn't say whether money orders are okay...)

This one's around $10

Your nearest Daylily farm in Lebanon, OH is Valley of the daylilies (Dan Bachman)
http://www.vendio.com/stores/v...
Close enough to drive there instead of shipping??? Usually you get an extra fan or two if you go there verses ordering. If you go, tell Dan I sent you and that you plan on going to the GCDHS Daylily show ( Dan is a member and always shows).
Love what you teach and teach what you love!

Lisa, you and I were thinking along the same lines. There is no substitute for actually seeing the daylilies in person, then making your choices from what you have seen with your own eyes, growing in your own area.

Being in the Cinci area, you are close to some very nice daylily gardens. (Dan's being one of them!) I would hold off, go to some of these gardens in person during bloom season this summer. We are only a few weeks away from peak bloom in your area... Here is some info you may find helpful...

I would LOVE to go to the Valley of the Daylilies but being a non-driver I can only go where the bus goes, which is in Hamilton County. Lebanon is in Warren County. The only places I get to see my plants "live and in person" are big-box stores and a few small local nurseries. My local mall is having a daylily show next month, so I'm very excited about that! Hurray!

I was one of the first 300 contributors to the plant database! Plant Identifier
Emperor's Dragon may be a candidate and is very affordable and hardy.
Possibly Paper Butterfly would be close or Wineberry Candy.

Daylily (Hemerocallis 'Wineberry Candy')
Daylily (Hemerocallis 'Paper Butterfly')
Daylily (Hemerocallis 'Emperor's Dragon')

Carnival in Mexico is pretty, but it was a little pricey compared to these others, and for me at least it has been a slow increaser and it's performance over the past three years has not impressed me.

I have Wineberry Candy, bought it at a local daylily sale (one of my first purchases) and it is one of my favorites
