We had a mini-heatwave lasting about a week, during which temperatures veered close to 100 and humidity readings stayed under 20%. I'm so glad all of my fuchsias are in the shade because all of the plants in full sun look frizzled. There's just not enough water in the world to keep sun-loving plants happy when our high temperatures and low humidity go to work on them.

The fuchsias came through quite well, though. The only ones blooming are a few unidentified ones I just bought at a hardware store, and Fuchsia magellanica, of course, which seems to never stop blooming. The fuchsias from previous years aren't even displaying any buds yet, but they are growing nicely.

As usual, Voodoo and Swingtime are the champs. They've been in the ground for several years, so they've grown about 3 feet since their February pruning.

My fuschias also survived the heat wave very well. It was in part sun, part shade. I guess the part shade time being in the hottest time helped a lot, plus I put water gels in the soil too. I deadheaded them before the heat wave came, and it is now actively making new buds.
This is a noid fuschia from local Home Depot, and I am growing them in a container..so just glad my first fuschia is surprisingly doing well too after the heat wave.

I'm glad I don't live near you. I couldn't stand that heat even if my fuchsias could. We do sometimes reach 90, and that's enough for me. Most times though we are a little less than inland, that's the joy of living on the coast. Cooler in summer, and warmer in winter. I know you may have a different environment over there, but I don't expect my fuchsias to come into bud till June.

Heat wave fever has hit here too ... I am SO glad I replanted my upright fuchsias to my deep-shade flowerbed! They are blooming more profusely than I have ever seen them before. And, no more tiny twig plants just trying to hang on in the blast furnace flower bed.

But, I am having the hardest time photographing them ... learning a new camera ... and the still-under-2-feet height of them means I may have to lie down on the front lawn to get their pics snapped. I can just imagine the neighbors' expressions

Hmmm, maybe a tiny tripod ... will give it a try...

Would gladly trade for your weather, John! I'd be happy to wait for June blooms if it meant no more than 90 degrees in the summer. Are yours mostly outdoors, in pots, or in ground? And, your's, Tarev?

Well, heat wave totally gone here now..but it is blowing strong wind, since yesterday, all day long, overnight and continues on today. I think this will go on the whole week. Like being in a seashore area but no ocean around But our forecasts says mid 90's coming back next weekend.

It is my firs time to grow fuschias..I just have them in a container. Now if only this relentless wind will just weaken a bit..it is too strong.

Oooo, what a nice healthy fuchsia you have! I know what you mean about the capricious weather. In Chicago we used to say "wait 15 minutes and the weather will entirely change." Here in 9b we say, I guess, wait a few days and the weather will entirely change! One day 105-degrees and you can't buy a breeze, the next it is 35 degrees cooler and hailing. But, very nice to get those hotter days broken up a bit, and gives us time to adjust to the oncoming heat immersion.

Sorry late answering. I grow my fuchsias all different ways, from hanging pots to in the ground, and standards. I will take some photo's when their in bloom and post them. I'm just starting to put them outside now, as there is not much chance of frosts now. The last few days have been brilliant with weather. Mid 70's with a light breeze off the sea. Our little village starts to get busy now with visitors, as we have three caravan camps in the area, and they all have to come through the village to get to them.

Mmmmm nice colors on all of these! Fuchsia just have such a calming effect - my eyes just sink in and my mind wanders. :}

I finally got around to getting some pictures. I'm not used to in-ground fuchsia and having to get very low down to aim the camera! I'm too near a welcome coma right now to check the names, but will try to link them up the next time I surface for air.

Oh, and three odd things. Tow have the oddest curling sideways blooms, and another an interesting upright stalk with blooms whirled around like a carnival ride. I'll display those three first. Any thoughts?

The first two look like damage during the early bud stage. I don't know if you have them over there, but if it was over here I would say capsid bug or thrips. Do you know the names of the other four. The third one could be Mr's Popple.

Wow, yours was gorgeous! I'm sorry it hates the heat. It would be the same here. Maybe I could grow it in winter or spring.

What a beauty! Yes, in zone 9a I wouldn't dare grow a fuchsia in the sunny parts of my garden.

I hear you @Eliseflower! I, too learned the hard way. I am still tempted to buy the pretty plant! If I had enough light in the house, I would transfer the, indoors the summer then back outside in the fall.

Sorry to read about your fuschias EliseFlower, that was also my mistake before. They can do well in my area from late winter to mid Spring, but beyond that it is just too much dry heat. Really taught me well to choose what I should plant around here. Glad I saw this thread again, made me read the old posts and I saw I did post before when my plant was still alive. The upper limit temperature-wise seemed to be low 90F, and even with thorough watering, it just won't make it. Plus our strong winds came too, so it just further dried up the plant faster.
