The most common festivities on Lei Day are hula, lei making demonstrations and contests, and the crowning of the Lei Queen and her court.
Each island has its own Lei, traditional to each made with flowers, fruit and vines found on that island. Hawaii’s Lei is the Lehua, made from blossoms of ‘Ohi’, a Lehua tree which grows on the slopes of the Volcano.

History
Officially made a holiday in 1929, and continues to date. The record for the world’s longest Lei was set at the 81st celebration of Lei Day in 2008. Unofficially the Lei measured more than a mile in length.

Though late made Leis today. We had fun celebrating "Lei Day".

Awwww looks like a lot of fun! Hurray! Hurray! This may be a stupid question but what are the things you need to make a Lei? Can I use any string?

5lb fish line is what we use , you can get it at Walmart. The line is stiff enough to pass through flower without a needle. Time for another photo lesson set... It was a blast. Hurray!

I've been teaching lei making classes and we use the traditional lei needle and the maybe less traditional dental floss.
Other than that, any combination of blooms and leaves, nuts, buds etc. will do. There is no such thing as the 'wrong' way to make a lei, although there are many traditional methods.

This is one I made last year.

Thank You! A full lei like that takes about 250-300 blooms (it was also quite long).
