No, she means baby tomatoes!
Flowers already pollinated, closed, and making tomatoes!

MY tomatoes, I direct seeded - they are only about 6-8" tall now.
But I KNOW they will eventually make tomatoes because the volunteers that come up from last year's dropped seeds always do!

Yep, I mean baby green tomatoes that you can already see. But they are small yet. Those are only the ones I found today. I have others much larger in my other tomato patches. But nothing showing any color yet so all still very green.

Just because you have a flower open doesn't mean it will set a tomato. Buds dry up and abort. Weather is too cold or too hot. Whatever reason but they don't always take.

I just planted the last plant of Tumbling Tom; it has tomatoes on it already, too. Smiling I think I'll end up being short in big tomato variety this year, but there should be plenty of salad tomatoes to go around. Maybe the plants I'm growing from saved (but not bagged) Black Krim seeds will produce such good tomatoes that I won't notice the lack. Whistling It's been warm enough here that some of my peppers are blossoming as well. I think the plants are still too small to leave them on..but they're trying.

It's a pleasant evening here; finally! I feel that I should be rushing to get something else done, but it's nice to just sit on the porch and enjoy good weather for a change, too. Big Grin

Rita, I am now suffering from severe zone envy!! Green Grin!
But, my tomato plants are looking great and I got their "spot" in the garden all prepared today, so will put them out in the next couple of days; then I'll wrap plastic (recycled from the big piece of plastic that I always cover my greenhouse with during the winter) around their big cages, to give them a nice toasty environment. Shouldn't be more than 2-1/2 months then before I'm eating ripe 'maters...

I am having tomatoes set really early this year. Earlier than ever before but I am, not about to complain.

Planted Blood Butcher dent corn for Matthew today. It was misting so I was hoping it was going to rain but it never did so I had to water everything again today. But my new row of beets and carrots are coming up really well under the shade cloth. Now if I can get the lettuce to grow without bolting right away I'll be happy.

I have some nice looking green tomatoes too. Nothing very big yet though so it will be awhile. But the plants are looking really good. And my Gypsy peppers have peppers 6'' long already. They start out with a burst but then seem to take forever to turn red. But I do think my peppers are ahead of last year. I remember last year when I set them out some weren't much more than an inch high! Once it got hot they took off though. This year they are already a foot or more high. I need to get some stakes in so I can Florida weave them or they'll be flopping all over the place.

I put aluminum foil around the base of all my squash plants today and I squashed several squash bugs. I mixed up the Murphy's Oil spray but I don't have a small spray bottle that works! Grrr! And David went to Wal Mart and I forgot to tell him I needed one. But he did spray with the big sprayer, all the beans and cukes, melons and squash with the garlic/sage/pepper spray. I am so hoping that works and keeps the bugs off those plants.

I started weeding but with it so dry the weeds are a killer to get out. Where the ground was soaked from the hoses it was easy. I have three flower rows that I tried to weed and couldn't make any headway so David is going to lay soakers on them and the next day I should be able to make progress.

Interesting that your season is ahead of schedule and ours is so far behind!! Things are catching up fast now, though -- I can only hope we don't get any more frost/freeze Blinking

We're not really ahead of schedule. And I hear where my mother is, near Traverse City, is going down to 43 tomorrow night!

I am!! I am ahead of schedule here. Now if my melon seeds would come up so I could get them planted I would be in great shape. I planted them late, should have done that two weeks ago.

Put my first row of Florida weave on my tomatoes. Will be doing the weave on my peppers this year also but they are not ready for a row of weave yet.

Arlene -- although I am in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, I am at nearly the same latitude as Traverse City! I think our low was at 49 last night, and our high temps are having trouble getting into the low 70s. Gardening in northern Michigan is not for the faint of heart! I saw photos of Marquette, MI, which is about 60 miles north of where I am, from Memorial Day -- showing people playing volleyball on the beach with BIG chunks of ice floating around on Lake Superior yet.

Rita -- from my perspective, your zone seems almost ideal for a gardener... but I love the lack of population where I live! At any rate, I'm just thankful to come to ATP to talk gardening because most of my friends (and my husband, although he tries to hide it) get a little tired of the garden chat after a while...

Same here. My SO says that I should "go tell it to the Flower Ladies", meaning ATP.

But then she wants to know "Are you off propagating with those Flower Ladies again??!!??"

I hate the winters here when they are bad like they have been these past two years. In the summer months of July and August it is usually hot and humid but I expect it and am used to it being so.

My garden usually does well. I especially love to grow those veggies.

Arlene, why do you put foil around the base of your squashes?

Foil around the base to try and prevent the vine borer from getting into the stems. The eggs are laid in the ground and they crawl to the stems and bore through. Not sure if it will help or not.

You could put a small tin can with both ends cut out around the seedling sink just a bit into the earth. Keeps cut works from getting to the stems.

I'm glad to have ATP to talk gardening, too.
I only just this year have made friends with ONE gardener here who knows what he's doing.
He even speaks botannical names!

Until him, I had ATP people to talk with (started on that other place, then moved over here). It's good. Especially in the winter.

Might work for cut worms but that will not work for the Evil Squash Vine Borers.
