I am beginning to think this is beyond the scope of garden gnomes. I'm with you Ken, cant wait to see what's next.

The thing that worries me is that they have been putting 2,4-D back into herbicides. Saying that it is an acceptable non harmful level. I have seen some photos of some of the mutant dandelion flowers that have come up after being treated with the stuff, wondering what it will do to us in the process.

well, I will admit that extra falls and standards are unusual but can happen with environmental stress, and more often is some irises than others, but half standard and half fall is a new one on me and a little disturbing.

More than likely the odd weather and eviro stress. Just got me thinking on a different tangent. Not sure what's going on here. I didn't spray any herbicides.

It wants to grow up to be a bendy straw! Poor little thing. I am sure your long spat of very cold weather this year played a part.

I had World Premiere do a half fall/half standard last year. The plant had produced a bunch of normal blooms, then the half & half was one of the last blooms. The weather was hot and rainy toward the end of bloom season so maybe that was the stressor?

The half colors are known as a chimara--not sure of the spelling. Usually weather related.

It's pretty, has violet falls on top and white on the bottom.

The four packs people have posted on this forum are often really cute, like Pamper Me. Could you selectively breed one to always have 4 falls & standards? Guess you would go through a lot of strains that would have a mix of the traits (some 3, some 4), plus only crazy iris people would buy it, and true purists would decry it, but still.....

Well, why not? If it created an aesthetically pleasing iris for the breeders enjoyment.

I don't think I would breed them, but I do enjoy Mother Nature's little surprises. This patch bloomed normally this year - here is what I got last year. I kinda like it! This is Fiesta Time . Maybe been partying a little too much!
