I see a total of 6 sedum on your list. How many should there be?

Hi Jo Ann
Look under this name hylotelephium in your list. Sedum had a name change. You will find your plants there.

Since this was confusing me I checked and it seems that not all the Sedums are included in the name change. How will the average person tell the difference? Can there be some type of cross-reference in the Database so we know to check in two places?

Good question Green. I was wondering the same thing.
I have always referred to Metrona as a sedum as well as a few others I tried to enter in the sedum catagory.
The sedum that are there are the small ones.

They should show up both by searching or browsing.

I did a simple search for Sedum Matrona. http://garden.org/plants/search/text.php?q=Sedum+Matrona&sub...

Browsing sedum, I selected M: http://garden.org/plants/browse/plants/genus/Sedum/?q=m

Browsing Hylotelephium, I selected M: http://garden.org/plants/browse/plants/genus/Hylotelephium/?...

EDIT: or are you looking for our lists to behave this way? Smiling

Evan

Entering Metrona as a sedum on my list. It didnt appear after entering properly. I closed ATP and re opened and still no entry in sedum.
Its just easier for me to use the common name when entering new plants on my list..

Going to Plant Database,
type in Sedum,
Click here to view all plants in the genus: Sedum. [At this point IMO there should be something to indicate that there are two names.]

The list comes up in some kind of random order, some say Sedum, some say Stonecrop, some have the Hylotelephium name, some have Rosularia, Prometheum, Phedimus, (and yes, I am the one who would like the entire world to be in strict alphabetical order - probably beating a dead horse with that one), but I cannot see the pattern in the list.

Also, since (I admit I am an idiot) I don't know the difference between 'searching' and 'browsing' I cannot understand why the lists is ordered differently for each. Confused

That list you are referring to is alphabetically ordered by latin name.

Jo Ann, you'll have more luck finding Matrona if you spell it correctly. You've spelled it "Metrona" in three posts in this thread.

Greene, many (but not all) of the plants once known as sedums have been reclassified as plants of other genera. When this happens, the name is corrected, but the previous name is entered as a synonym. When you browse all of the plants in the Sedum genus, therefore, you'll find entries for plants of the Hylotelephium, Phedimus, and other genera if the Sedum genus is also listed as a synonym.

The list is in alphabetical order by species.

zuzu . I need a dispensation and prostrate myself for being a horrible speller. Grade school was in the 40's and we learned a new method of phonically spelling. The best way to deal with me is "Oh, it's JoAnn again with mis spelled words" and just move on.

Without making a mountain out of a mole hill and steering us in the wrong direction. I'll just say, My issue was solved and I am out .

Thanks for the link. I have looked at that list and it is not strictly alphabetical as it starts out with Sedum as the first word then tosses in a Roseulaia, Promeththeum, Phediums, then happily goes back to Sedum...oops, and there is an Orostachys...and that's only on the first page. Son't see a Hylotelephium until page 2. There are 41 pages of this to get through.

In that link, you are browsing by the genus Sedum so it lists all of the plants that are, or were, in the genus. Rosularia adenotricha subsp. adenotricha used to be Sedum adenotrichum, so it's right where it should be in an alphabetical list, between Sedum actinocarpum and Sedum adolphi. Similarly, Phedimus aizoon used to be Sedum aizoon and is between Sedum aetnense subsp. aranjuezii and Sedum alamosanum.

The system is trying to help you here by showing, not just the plants that are currently classified under the genus Sedum, but also plants you would expect to be there if you are using an outdated taxonomy.

zuzu says that list is in order of species;
KentPfeiffer says the same list is in order of genus.

In the alphabet, S comes after H, P, O and R. Too bad for me, I guess I will just have to get over it. Whistling

I once moved to a town where the residents gave directions by saying,
"Turn left where Sears used to be and then turn right where JCPenney was."
Those directions were no help to me as I was a new resident and had no knowledge of the former locations of those two stores.

At the moment I feel the same way about the 'alphabetical' list which assumes I know something that used to be true.

I've said it before, I'm happy to change how we do things if a consensus of the change to be made can be reached. Since we never seem to get a firm proposal I have to assume that the vast majority of the database users like it the way it is.

Greene, you're misquoting Kent. He doesn't say it's in order of genus. He says you "are browsing by the genus Sedum." It is a list of sedums (whether Sedum is the accepted name or merely a synonym) in alphabetical order by species. It's extremely helpful to people who want to find all of the sedums under their current names.

Maybe this screenshot will help. I highlighted the species so @greene can more easily see that they are arranged alphabetically.
