We had the most wonderful soil there, all you had to do was dig a hole, plop something in and it grew like mad. When we did our daylily bed in FL, we followed Dan Hansen's directions for daylilies: 1/3 garden soil, 1/3 black cow and 1/3 damp sphagnum moss. When it comes time to lift them and I dig down with the shovel, there is always compacted sand at the bottom, even though we (actually DH) dug holes 18" deep! Where did the good stuff go?
