As a comment about Lily (Lilium auratum var. platyphyllum), TBGDN wrote:

This is an enormous bloom with a unique combination of characteristics. First, its size is almost 10 inches across. Although outward facing, their weight seems to make them want to bow to a downward position. The colors are very appealing, with golden yellow bands flowing down each petal and sepal center. The burgundy freckles complete the picture.

As much as I've tried to grow this cultivar over the years, it simply does not survive more than a couple of years. We have loads of differing lilies which thrive here. This leads me to believe our USDA Zone 5a/b might be the problem, or possibly our soil pH.

Leon,

Old House Gardens state it "requires acid soil to return well."

Scroll down to the one that states: L. auratum platyphyllum, GOLD BAND LILY and read the description.

It's hardy for you. 5a-7b

Thanks Marilyn,
I hate to give up on anything as nice as this one. My soil runs somewhat on the alkaline (sweet) side of the scale so I think probably a soil acidifer should be added when planting. Also it seems this site (Old House) is reputable so maybe I can get a few bulbs for fall planting. Have you had experience with Old House Gardens?

Yes! I ordered 3 of these Lilies, 10 COULEUR CARDINAL Tulips, and 35 (25 plus an add'l order of 25) Galanthus nivalis, TRADITIONAL SNOWDROP last Fall. All were true to name and with no problems. Hurray!

I'm thinking about planting more of these lilies this Fall, since they're so beautiful and the fragrance is wonderful! Lovey dubby I just have to make sure to keep the flowerbed acid for them. I want to have more of that wonderful fragrance in front of our porch. Lovey dubby

You should give them a try! Thumbs up Minimum order is $30.00. Order early so they're not sold out of something you want. I didn't order until October and they still had them, but I don't think I'll wait that long again. These Lilies were the main reason I ordered from them.

Thanks again for all the good information. I'm sure I wont wait so late to order. And I want to do everything possible to give them a fighting chance here. Totally agree their fragrance is nice and mine had enormous blooms. Looks like yours have large blooms also. I'll order online for fall planting.

I did get one mislabeled plant from OHG, but it's one I really like, and it's doing so well that I'm glad I didn't ask for a replacement.

Leon, I agree with Marilyn. OHG is a good bet for healthy plants.

My Gold Band Lily has petered out as well. I bought it elsewhere, and didn't realize how particular it was to soil PH.
