I found this large seed pod with a single seed fallen on a bolder in the river in the Atlantic Rainforest in Brazil, probably fallen from a tree close by, but I couldn't find out which one, the trees were huge and the tree canopy very dense.
There are 4 species registered in the Flora do Brasil for the Rio de Janeiro state.
Mucuna analucianae
Mucuna japira
Mucuna pruriens
Mucuna urens
The shape of the seed pod and seed matches the best for Mucuna urens, normally the seed pods have spiky hairs, but mine was looking old and probably had lost them exposed to the elements. https://www.google.be/search?q...
Thanks Janet, maybe Mucuna japira might also be a valid candidate, such a pity I cannot find images of the seeds themselves on the web, but the web photos of the seeds of Mucuna urens are a perfect match..
The seed pods themselves might be variable, normally there should be two seeds or more in there, mine had only one and that could explain why the seed pod is less elongated than normal.
Seed pods often vary Myriam, some just fail to develop a second or more viable seed.
Have you managed to germinate a seed? I seem to remember they needed to be washed about in the sea for so long, and they need a lot of sun in a tropical climate, so I think I will have to say no thank you but thanks for the offer.
