Very unusual! Could you tell us where you are located? It can help to know where in the world the plant is from, it looks like you have cut it from a shrub or tree?

My guess is Blazing Star (Mentzelia laevicaulis)

to ATP, Sawdust!

its growing amongst the rocks (large gravel) along the east fork of the Illinois river valley near Cave Junction ,Oregon.
its what appears to be a single stalk plant, that comes up each year. I dont know if it regrows from the previous years plant, or requires reseeding. dont know if its a common weed here or an exotic that has escaped
