Winchester: Magical & Mystical (Part 1)

By NEILMUIR1
July 20, 2010

The first enclosure at Winchester was built in 150 BC during the Iron Age, at the same time that a trading center was established. In 70 AD the Romans arrived and called Winchester "Venta Belgarum - marketplace of the Belgae," a regional capital. Then in 410 AD the Romans left and the capital collapsed. In 648 AD the first minster was founded as Christianity came to Winchester, now called the old minster. After the City's surrender to William the Conqueror in 1066, he started to build the present cathedral. The history of what was once the capital of England is so great it would need two lifetimes to even learn it all!

Neil, I enjoyed your article on Winchester, I remember all the weekends I used to drive down to see you at college and bring you homemade goodies. How proud Dad and I were to attend your degree ceremony in Winchester Cathedral when you were presented with your scroll by the Minister of Agriculture (John Gummer). Those years flew by and your dear Auntie Win used to love a drive down tro see you. Happy days, keep up your enthusiasm for gardens and history and photography. mum
I do hope you enjoy these as much as I have making them.
Eileen.

Mum, I have been telling the silly sod he is good at taking photos but typical man he won't listen. So I just let him wander with his camera and some of the photos he sends me at work are amazing.
He claims he is just an amateur, when will he listen?
Love Sarah.

Now I know whose side you are on!
I am only an amateur who likes to take photos, I have no professional camera just an entry level one, and yes I take a lot of photos just to get the one i want!
So is that wrong? It is my hobby as well.
Simply to walk with nature and see its beauty, is all I want and all I require, plus it gets me away from 'er indoors."
I prefer plants! They don't nag so much.
Regards.
Neil.

I am now and always have been on your side. You are an amazing photographer and do talk beautiful pictures. Sarah was saying she has told you that and you don't listen. So LISTEN and all is well....

A professional doesn't need high faluting cameras and equipment to take wonderful pictures and you have proved it.
