dbrawner: Are you asking for a general entry for Yucca?

We have a general entry for Yucca filamentosa and separate entries for the different cultivars of Y. filamentosa:

http://garden.org/plants/searc...

Edited to add: I get really confused with some database entries having a "Parent" plant while others have a "General" entry. I'd think cultivation methods would be the same for all of the Y. filamentosa species, so should photo's go here Adam's Needle (Yucca filamentosa) if we don't know a particular cultivar name?

He is asking for this so that all the data details from Adam's Needle (Yucca filamentosa) get copied down to all the cultivars that match the species.

And, a good request it is ... having all pertinent info copied to all cultivars of that species.

Edited to add: dbrawner, I've sent you acorns in thanks for your suggestion.

Thanks for the proposal D. Much of the data in the Yucca filamentosa entry can be copied to it's cultivars, but not all. Generally plant dimensions, leaf and/or flower color, sometimes even hardiness, etc. aren't the same for all. Given the shear number of possibilities I believe Parent Plant status for a species plant should happen very rarely, if at all. We do have the ability to add data to multiple plants of the same species however. Let me lay out the possible data points which apply to all.

What is this ability? I have some plans to program a feature to allow this to happen without using the parent plant feature but I don't want to duplicate a feature that I may have already created.

Dave, I should have noted that Admins and Plant Admins have this tool: Add a data checkbox to specified plants
I this Case Yucca filamentosa.

Nice job, Evan, thank you! Thumbs up

I expect @dbrawner will have more of these in the coming days. I am thinking of making a tool where any member can submit a proposal for an entire data collection (just like you would for a single plant) that covers a range of plants like the admin tool you're talking about. It would go into moderation where the admins see it, possibly edit it, and approve it.

That sounds like a good tool Dave. Especially with the ability to edit available. I was just informed I added a Minimum cold hardiness of 9b. *Blush*

Hopefully members will be patient as verifying 6 or 7 plants is fairly straight forward. Verifying data for a species with huge numbers of varieties is time consuming.

My memory definitely isn't razor sharp!

Evan, I worked all morning on the tool. Since the members at large will have access to it, I'm moving slowly and cautiously in building it. But it's going to be REALLY nice when it's done!

Super!!

One feature of the existing tool is a check box associated with the write box not being displayed to fill in. If this functionality goes forward then it might be best to not display these choices.

ex. Leaves;
other; write-box. wouldn't be displayed as a choice
