A Flower Pot for All Seasons

By rocklady
August 13, 2014

It is a chore to keep plants in pots watered and looking nice during the hot summers as well as through the winter. I have found self-watering pots to be useful in helping me without a lot of work on my part. (I'm basically lazy.)

Jean,

Where did you get yours? I've seen different ones offered at Gardeners Supply and have thought about (off and on) getting some, but never did.

How long have you had them?

Great idea! Thumbs up

Do you have these in AR or FL?

Jean, what a great little article, and I love your combo containers! I never would have thought of that combination, but it sure works wonderfully for you. Hurray!

I bought my first self-watering container when I got a hanging combo planter for myself for Mother's Day this year. (my beloved co-worker put it together for me, it simply was a "Must Have"!). I LOVE that thing!! (oh, sorry... I should clarify - I work at a nursery/garden center). I think I've had to water the lovelies in that pot maybe once a month or so since Mother's Day. They really are a God-send to us "lazy gardeners".

Marilyn, if you have the chance to get one or 2 (or more, heehee), I highly recommend them, they are very helpful!! Thumbs up

Lazy or not, these are great. All you have to do is miss one watering in a pot and you get crispy critters. And what if you go on vacation or travel in your job? These and the crystals are great inventions Hurray!

I grow a lot of plants in these containers and I definitely agree with Jeanie.

@Marilyn I'm not sure where I purchased the containers but they are here in AR, so I probably got them at Lowe's. They have to endure the hot summer here in AR and I only have to water them a couple of times during our hottest and driest month, which is July. Although July was not as hot and wetter than usual this year, I still had to do minimal watering.

As many things as your grow, Marilyn, I think you would be very happy with them. Here, Walmart and Home Depot also have them as well as Lowe's.

Thanks Tee! I tip my hat to you.

Can these type of containers be left outside all winter, including the plant, soil and any water left in it?

@Marilyn Mine have set outside for several years. Probably will have to redo them sometime, but for now, everything had been fine.

Thank you for that info Jean, I'd been wondering if I should empty mine out and bring it inside over the winter. Thank You!

I keep some of my spider plants there and they thrive so well, any season.

But if you are planting succulents, during the warm season, it is okay, during the colder season, and if it rains a lot, I would pop out the base, to allow water to drain, otherwise, succulents will rot.

I always find these containers at Walmart too.

@Tee I tip mine if they seem to have a lot of water still stored in them, and so far they've been fine.
