Hymenocallis

I posted a similar plant (asking for an ID) and was told only that it's a Hymenocallis. They could not be more specific.
Perhaps you will have a more definite answer since yours in in Hawaii. Thumbs up

Looks more like Hymenocallis to me too.

Spider Lily (Hymenocallis littoralis) is one that grows in Hawaii as well as many other areas.

Crinum asiaticum also grows in Hawaii. Here are photo's for comparison:

It's clearly not Crinum asiaticum - the flower doesn't match. :-)

Here are a number of similar-looking Hymenocallis species:
http://www.pacificbulbsociety....

Given the very amenable climate, I'm sure any of them could be grown easily in Hawaii (though, of course, they could be grown anywhere that the necessary conditions were provided). Smiling

ok, i agree, spider lily as 'hymenocallis'. apparently crinum asiaticum is also called spider lily. i did see lots of spider lilies in the tropics.
here's a neat site with hawaiian plant pics. including some hymenocallis.

The plants look similar, Skylark. That being said, I withdraw the "speciosa" designation, but stand by Hymenocallis.

Crinum asiaticum has long narrow petals, prominent stamen and the anthers are a magenta color.

i now understand the difference, i saw plenty of both, i just got confused by 'spider lily' being applied to both. there are many images marked as spider lily that show both crinum asiaticum and hymenocallis. and of course i don't know all varieties of crinum. there are some with very skinny petals just like hymenocallis. the little 'corona' in the center is very characteristic though and is only on hymenocallis - so now i'll remember.

so there is one type with like a little funnel inside. like this
http://www.imagejuicy.com/imag...
it is labeled in many-many places as crinum asiaticum.
and then i pulled this interesting compare of plants side by side, very educational: just look at pics unless you can speak cantonese ;)
http://www.hkwildlife.net/view...
and it happens that in ATP database there is no pic of Crinum asiaticum var. sinicum Baker...i am going to rummage in my files!

That first link is not C asiaticum var sinicum. There are a lot of mis-ID'ed plants on the web.

This is C asiaticum var sinicum

I believe it is Hymenocallis littoralis as SongofJoy suggests because of the anther facing sideways and the leaves are wide at the base.

But then I looked up Hymenocallis caribaea as Jon mentioned and of course that makes sense also because the flower was about 10 - 12 inches in diameter and the leaves were very broad, about 2 - 2/12 inches wide.... hmmm

Maybe that answers the question.... it must be the Hymenocallis caribaea ‘tropical giant’

Thank You! Thank You! all for your investigating for me Group hug

i just came across another plant that has a little funnel with skinny fingers pancratium maritimum - it's wide spread in meditteranian areas, called
sand lily. much smaller then H. and funnel is 'frilled'. so different, but i think that's the one where funnel is detached from petals.

i am quite aware of that, but i do like to investigate on my own and then try to figure out which ones are not right. the chinese side-by-side compare was best!

Photos on the internet should be viewed with caution, unless you can find a site which one would expect to show reliable photos.

Hymenocallis littoralis on the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute I would consider more likely to be reliable than not.

http://biogeodb.stri.si.edu/bi...

The long tepals and size seem to match this, however one can never be certain. The length of the tube suggests a large flower but we can't see the tube in the photo posted.

Each flower's tube is 14 to 17 cm (5 to 7 inches) long or longer

thanks, that's a great ref site. unfortunately those that are 100% reliable often lack pics. the pics that i post to DB usually come from large bot gardens where i also take a pic of the label. but even that is not 100% accurate, and so many plants even there are not labeled...it's a sad state of affairs.

@greene,
I believe it is the Hymenocallis caribaea as Jon mentioned. It has a flower that is 10 - 12 inches and the tube was at least 8 inches. The leaves are wide at the bottom. So Thank You! everyone that researched my interesting plant.
